Ultimate E55 Engine

Let's say money was no object and you can even include custom work, what mods and work would you do to a 55 engine and gearbox. Let's leave turbocharging and stuff out, let's talk more realistic mods that can be done. What would be your ultimate 55 engine and gearbox. List mods...GO!

"Money no object" build implies that there's no need to be realistic.....

To me that implies either complete engine swaps or complex turbo setups.

See SLR parts catalague ... honestly thats the bananas all round...

Outside of that its only limited to your budget.

for example ~15k€ will get you MKB top coolers
8k$ carbon ceramic brakes for weight...

I think you need to give budget parameters...

Why leave turbocharging out? It is absolutely a realistic thing to do and would definitely be #1 on my list if I had the cash. I would just slap SLR pistons and rods and add ported heads on an otherwise stock 55K and then install two GTX3582R turbochargers and watch my oem tranny/prop shaft explode when 900+wtrq shred it. Then just upgrade those units and see my E55 do 8's.

Why limit yourself? He did say "money was no object". I'm going with a jet engine from a Cobra gunship.

Well we are speaking hypothetically and a swap would be too drastic and too much modification. I'm talking about everyone's personal parts wish list.

You're right it would but since no one has done it yet its not really a straight up mod since custom fab needs to be done and testing and things could go wrong. By the way I didn't realize how expensive Ti rods were it's incredible.

Subtle but that's too realistic, I was talking about something insane and out of this world like....a heat exchanger

You have alot of mods already....and the fastest 55 so your list of mods is gonna be one of the shortest but that does make you top dog in the 55 clan

OK Ill give it a go ...

Rear Tank with Johnson CM90, and a chiller package to keep water tank cool.

Front rad - not so sure all the stuff we are sold is taht much better then OEM so I would leave that be to start.

TB .. 82mm Rentech + their airbox and filters.

Pulley ... hmmm 180 ASP ... it works doesnt it?

Exhaust ... supersprint full long tubes... + eisenman back boxes, no cats.

Flowed heads

Forged pistons, and lighter rods while u at it.

Top mount SLR Coolers modified to fit our engine bay - with these will need to increase the front rad capacity though...

Gearbox spec to SL65 clutches, delimit the load limiter, increase shift speeds.

Lightweight wheels and carbon ceramic brakes...

Tune .. goodness knows but something custom...

What have I missed on purpose ?

LSX is the best/cheapest platform to make big power. You can take a stock LQ9 (6.0l truck engine),change the cam to a turbo cam and put a single or twins on it,new injectors and make 800 SAFE rwhp and turn it up to over 1000hp for fun. Parts are cheap, everything you can think of is available, anyone can tune them, tons of transmission choices, and blocks are a dime a dozen. Cant get much better than that. I had a LS2 GTO with a 440 LSX and had to be one of the funnest cars ive ever had. Torque everywhere, lots of power up top, spin to 7200rpm all day long and a 200 wet kit for fun. ***GTO T56's do not like powershifting*** 03-04 cobra's seemed to hold up better

Custom High lift Cams ground for low overlap( Blower cam specs)

Active cooling on SC Loop ( Killer chiller style)

90-100mm TB of some sort

2800 RPM Stall 11" Torque converter + beefed axles and 1 peice Driveshaft.
Also 3.06-3.55 gearing

Big Cams, Gear and a High stall TC would COMPLETELY change the character of the car! For the good if you ask me ;-)>

No doubt the LSX blocks are amazing and they're cheap that makes them even better. The M113 is no competition when it comes to value for money you're right but it's a pretty drastic mode to do an engine swap. Would you do it though because it would kind of take the character away from the Mercedes, after all fitting a chevy engine. I'm no fanboy but it just wouldn't seem right. If done though it would be one hell of a beast....emphasis on HELL

5.5 bored and stroked as much as possible. All forged.

Cams ground to match.

Custom designed 4 valve per cyl heads

Completely redesigned intercooler system.

Largest Whipple you could fit under the hood along with massive bore TB.

All nice and neatly dyno tuned to race gas.

That would make me a happy camper.

I would go with the 2013 GT500 Motor with a 4.0 Whipple, and a built auto tranny with a monster stall.

Buy a spare E55 and drop it off to Nelson Racing Engines and tell Tom that money is no object. He would get you over 1000rwhp for sure. Maybe with the supercharger; but with twin turbos for sure. He has built many 2500hp street cars.

This. N/A is a different story (I'd take an M156 any day) but the M113 is no LSX.
