blando,

No I need to take some time off again and give it another try. I also want to see what others experience. I see Stephens got several runs-- he apparently had the right equipment to make it work.

Yes
It is a very complicated procedure that involves turning the ESP off! The car will beep and the display turns red, but the car should still run.

JLBMerc...the air inlet tube you purchased...how much? and where did you purchase it (dealer parts department or independent parts vendor)?

Also, what kind of air filter is that? RennTech?

Are those BMC Filters (Green)? What part number are you using? FOr some reason then do not show on their web-site.

Thanks,

Schiznick

AMGfan,

I went to my local Mercedes parts counter and requested the driverside S500 inlet tube---it was around $25.00 or so---They actually had it in stock.

Newblack55,

They had the performance air cleaners in stock at the shop where the mods where done---I will find out the brand and part number.---Same ones they use for the SL55s.

Thanks for the info.

NewBlack55,

The air filters used on my car were Green High Performance Air Filters from greenfilterusa.com----apparently RENNtech supplied the installer with these.

Do you think these filters are superior to K and N?

aspracing.com quoted me to provide a larger pulley for my sl55 for $650.00. maybe someone wants to upgrade without spending thousands. the ecu should adapt to the change automatically. if not just get the ecu work done for less.

Dr. Chill,

Apparently the Green Filters perform similarly to K &N---these are the ones the RENNtech chooses to use---

aspracing.com ---cool---it is nice to have options----there is no doubt there is a ton of margin in RENNtechs pricing. Perhaps my reference point is skewed; I used to purchase Dinan products---now that is where you can spend thousands.

I've ordered the pulley from ASP already. I should have it in a couple of weeks and will keep you all posted with results.

Question

ok, I have to ask a dumb question. does the 10% larger pulley turn everything faster (ac, power steering, alternator and supercharger) which, other than the significant gain in SC output would cause a small HP loss (on a NA engine)? if this is the case does anyone make a pulley for the SC that is 10% smaller? Thanks, mp

good question. contact aspracing.com and ask them. i would be interested in the answer. they told me the difference in rpm of the accessories was not a problem.

asp racing just told me they haven't any info on the pulley for the supercharger, but would be able to design smaller pulley if one was provided. would the smaller pulley change to rpm's to too high a rev? would the additional boost create too much heat for the intercooler? what are the possible problems other than blown engines. don't you think amg would have set the boost to the best, safest, and highest calculations?

if you make a new 10% smaller pulley for the SC it will spin 10% faster - exactly the same as if you put the Renntech crankshaft pulley on which is 10% larger and makes the SC and everything else spin 10% faster. The ecu would still need the same type of Renntech upgrade I supose.

So then wouldn't it more make sense for the tuners to just make smaller SC pulleys, rather than increasing the speed on all the other components? I'm sure there's some good reason that I'm missing...

The front pulley includes the clutch unit for the supercharger, so I don't think it it is easy to significantly reduce its size. Reducing the size of the pulley will also reduce the amount of surface area for the belt to contact resulting in potential belt slippage.

JLB,

Do you have a number for them? I can find no mention of them and I'd like to get the pulley and ECU flash this weekend while I'm in town. I'm also thinking about the sport mufflers, have you heard it and why didn't you do it? I wouldn't mind a bit more engine burble, I love the way the car sounds but think it's a bit subdued.

Kaneman,

His name is Jergen he is at 713-683-8605----But I talked with him and it sounds like you found him already. As you now know, the sport mufflers are not yet ready for the E55 --at least coming from RENNtech---apparently, they have a prototype and are working with some exhaust manufacturers. I am sorry I will be out of town, I really wanted to see your wheels. Jergen said he will take some more pics--while the car is on the lift. Have fun and enjoy!

Yeah I had a momentary flash of intelligence and called RENNtech to get their number . I'm gonna bring the car up this week and pick it up this weekend. Actually you can drop by and see the XM installation for yourself and decide how you like it!

I'm picking the car up tomorrow so I'll let y'all know what I feel as far as seat of the pants goes. I've had 1300 miles with it thus far so I've had enough time to learn the car and it's responses fairly well.

Question

kaneman - what is the situation regarding warranty on the car after the Renntech upgrade?

supposedly the upgrade voids the warranty but it's actually illegal for that to happen. If something fails under warranty the onus is on Mercedes to PROVE that the upgrade caused the failure in order to deny the warranty claim.

Just picked it up, and in two words... HOLY *****!!!!!!!!!!!! The upgrade COMPLETELY changes the character of the car... the E55 stock is docile unless pushed, it's happy loafing along at half throttle. With the pulley and ECU upgrade the car does a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde... it's only docile at the smallest throttle openings. Any more and it's just like opening the floodgates. There's SOOoooo much power avalable, so much torque and it's everywhere!! Down low, up high, it doesn't feel like there's a flat spot. Even mid-gear the car pulls like a freight train. NOT recommended if you only like the occasional high-speed sprint. Also the supercharger whine is VERY audible now. I happen to love it but I"m sure some will think it obnoxious... it's definitely not low key anymore and it's the best money I've ever spent on a car mod.
