Rear clunking?

What does it sound like when the shocks in the rear are dead?

Everytime I go over a speed bump or something similar, it sounds as if my entire rear is being lifted, then dropped.

That sounds about right. You can get each rear shock for about $300 on parts.com and there is a diy write up somewhere around here

You may also make sure your rear end support bolts have not broken. That happens a lot and you can hear it on corners as well.

Check the subframe bolts.

In my car, it is both air bellows that are making the same identical noise you describe. As per my local mb dealer, this is a very.common problem and can only be fixed by installing new air bellows.

Also examine the control arm bushings to see if the rubber hasn't cracked or torn. While under there you can also check the exhaust hangers and sway bar bushings.

Sorry, I did a little search to find "bellows"... What exactly are they?

The bags themselves?

The air bags with the accordion pattern on them that maintain the height of the car.

I have the sound too, its like having a dead body in trunk that once going over a speed bump and the dead body lift and drop. I was guessing its the exhaust hitting the bottom of the trunk.
