OBDII reports / State Inspections trouble
Hi All:
I have an '08 that is not passing NC state inspection due to a not ready rejection , due to the Catalytic Converter Efficiency, the )2 sensor, and the Heated )2 sensor reporting "not ready" My service adviser at Merc tells me that "this is normal" and that I must drive the car for awhile so that the sensors can gather the data by running the tests they are meant to perform.
The problem started when during a normal service, they checked the battery, evidebtly they disconnected it, (they say no), and the sensors are now without data... They tell me that the tests run every 100 miles or so, at random, and are cyclical. They say that they cannot initiate the tests, we simply must wait. The problem is my registration is now invalid, and has been for a month. I already have one ticket. The car now has been driven over 500 miles, and idling at startup for 5 minutes or so, as he instructed. No change in the sensor report. He wants to keep saying "there is nothing wrong", and this really steams me. I am dropping the car off again today for the 5th time to have them try to complete the inspection...
Anyone have any experience with this? Or any ideas?

I think that they had disconnect the battery or they clear the codes, you must drive the car at at least 50 mile to put a drive cycle in the computer then if no check engine light it should past inspection ok

I have same exact problem. Mine was because of an ECU tune. EC reflashed it back to OEM and failed again. I drove 200 miles and they all came back on

When you drive the car it must be over 50 for 15 mins with no cruise control on. Then some city driving 15 mins or so and that should do it. I had the same issuse when I had my car in storage and took it out for PA inpection " my battery was dead and I changed it". If they reset the ECU or cleared all codes it will act the sameway.

Thanks for the replies..
my car is stock, and its now been close to 600 miles without these sensors reporting data. Lots of highway, and city driving in that time...
still stuck....

I can get my car to pass in less than a day so here is some tricks I do.You might aswell reset the ecu and start fresh.
Keep around 75-80% gas in the car
first on cold start up with fresh reset ecu
let it idle for 10 min without touching the gas
turn on rear defroster and wait 5-7 min
rev car to 2k rpms and wait about 25-30 seconds
turn on front defroster with the ac on and wait about 5-7 min
go drive on the highway for about 10 min and then beat on it to get the cats really hot.
then shut her down and most monitors should be passed and the last one will be the evap since the car needs to cycle a cold start and make sure there is at least 75% fuel in the tank or that monitor will never pass.

When i did my smog test few months ago i also failed and the mec told me that need to warm up the car at least 10 to 15 minutes. Try to do what Skratch77 suggested.

Here is how I passed inspection in NC.
I have Kleeman headers, no cats (just a 02 bung welded in) and then resonator and mufflers.
I bought 02 Bung extenders from TTM.
Installed extenders, left battery unplugged overnight. Drove about 30 miles and the car passed the OBDII inspection no problem.

The Merc service agent who performs the inspections gets a printout of all the sensors. It shows those three as "not ready", ie.. not having data from the tests. They say that they cannot simply run the tests, it must happen in the normal course of driving. They have run the SDS diags and found the sensors to be ok. I am trying to see if anyone can tell me otherwise... I appreciate the tips, I will try those... thanks..

That was it... I have Kleemann headers and tune... evidently the tune would not allow the emission tests to run. The dealership reprogrammed the ECU, the tests ran, only to show one of the Kleemann cats being questionable... Haha, the dealership gave me a quote to replace the entire manifold, and exhaust.. $9k... I got in touch with Cory ay Kleemann through the local perf shop who installed the headers, etc... and they say no prob, send the ecu back to them, they will re flash and get back to proper operation. I don't know why the ecu with the Kleemann software wouldn't allow the tests to run, but I'm sure that they will correct the issue...
