Anyone using Progressive Snap shot?

So I gave in....it is a device plugged into the obd2 port. They monitor driving habbits. They say, they will not raise your rate based on the info they collect, but can lower it up to 30% I was very hesitant and still have not put it in the E55, but just did in my truck and wife's E350. You can then go online and check your own driving. Basically they look for hard braking is what they say, and if you dont have too many hard brakes than that is good. Although they can see speed also........which is why I dont really want it in the 55. Has anyone here actually got a discount with the 55 using it?

There has to be a catch, they just dont send things to save people money and for them to make less revenue.

They consider a hard brake 7mph or more drop in 1 second. On my first drive to work in my truck I had one.......

Berti00-- how long did you use/have the device in your car? just 2 weeks?

Will they turn you in if you do 150mpg in a 65? Another method for big business to control our lives.

Insurance is a necessity, however THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS!

Let's see:

Dream: 09:00am: Board meeting with top execs, analyst. "OK team, I want to find a way to save our customers a ton of money and at the same time for us to lose additional revenue. Who is with me?"

Reality: 07:30am: CEO to rest. :" Listen up all you MF, we are going to convince those that do not know anything about insurance to plug a device into their car, so that we can really screw them over." "Good idea boss."

Really, who falls for this stuff these days?

Yup I get that point. But.....what if you were to find a way around it and trick them......like I think I have....

Dude, this is Insurance business, there is no tricking them, they make money on statistics, that what they are doing: collecting stats. They are all lovy right now offering discount so drivers plug the bug in their car.

But one needs to read the fine print:
http://www.progressive.com/auto/snap...statement.aspx
and
http://www.progressive.com/auto/snap...onditions.aspx

They are all nice and protecting your privacy:
"However, the device does not have GPS, so it does not track vehicle location or whether you're exceeding the speed limit (although, with your consent, we may be able to determine the approximate location of your vehicle using cellular technology in the event of theft)"

BUT: You will not get notification when the T&C changes (AND THEY WILL)
"The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies (Progressive) reserves the right to modify the terms and conditions at any time. Modifications to these terms and conditions can be viewed by logging in to your policy through www.progressive.com. Continued participation in Snapshot by you will constitute your acceptance of any revisions to these terms and conditions. Please check this page regularly."

Also: do not do it if you are leasing your car, as you are not in charge anymore.
"In the event that you have an insurance claim with us, we will not use the data to resolve the claim without first obtaining your permission or (if not you) the registered vehicle owner's permission."

Again this is a data business, they are not here to save you money, they are here to make money, they are trading a 2-4% discount right now for a larger payback later. And you better believe they WILL deny claim based on this.

I found it interesting that it is not available in most states that have strong consumer protection around insurance, like Cali or Washington.

Bottom line, I will not get anywhere close this or similar tech.

If privacy means anything to you...

i do not have any experience with the snapshot program or device, however, i do have a "bug" that seems to be almost the exact same thing. I have my own to monitor my own personal driving habits (if i bring it to the track, or would like to see how i could improve fuel economy on daily routes or whatever). It is honestly SCARY how much information this thing can store. Once i'm done, i plug it into my PC and it brings me to a flury of information. It will tell me exactly WHERE i was, what RPM i was at, how fast i was going, etc. The part that is scary to me is that it knows my exact location at all times. so, after that, if you're still comfortable with it, go right on ahead!

Well this thing does not use gps, so they cannot track you. Anyhow, I am tricking it, and have been doing it for 3 days now. When my 30 days are up, and I get my discount, I'll let the cat out of the bag.
