2007 6.3 cam wear...

So I just purchased a 2007 E63 with 32K on the clock...NOW I read that they have the cam failures. Wish I would have done slightly more research before buying...

Nevertheless, I bought it and in love with it...so is the wife.

What can I do to prevent, prolong, help alleviate...etc etc??

Does running 5w40 vs the 0w-40 help? Does one oil make vs another help?

Basically, i am lost as to what i can do (if anything) to let me enjoy my ride with relative confidence that Ill never hear that dreaded TICK one fine morning upon startup.

I know I am a newbie..but a concerned owner as well.

Thanks guys.

I don't think there's any big secrets, and I have ONLY read about the failure in that one thread about the lawsuit itself. To ease your mind just make sure you are always under warranty, obviously, and make sure any mods/tunes you do won't jeopardize that warranty

No warranty...only mods on the prospective list are slight exhaust work, new air filters, and a tune.

I got lucky (i think), as I got my car from CarMax (generally a sin I know), and they offer a Warranty for anything and everything they sell, while most 3rd parties no longer offer coverage on the V12s and AMG's.

Air filters won't be an issue, if you get a Eurocharged tune, you don't have to remove the ECU (detectable), and you can reflash it to stock whenever you go in for service, or if you somehow blow something up. I'd say whatever exhaust mods you do, keep "back to stock" in mind, both for warranty purposes and potential re-sale should you ever upgrade to the new 5.5TT

Thanks for the replys...

I got told by a buddy who owns a Euro shop that specializes in BMW and he told me about Lubri-Moly and that he uses that in all his and customers cars.

Says its superior to M1, and that I should run 5w-40.

Thoughts??

I'd assume in a warm climate the heavier 5W-xx would still be fine, but didn't consider untill jsut reading something, that in general, the reason newer cars use thinner (lower 1st number) oils is that clearances on parts are much tighter that in the past.

I imagine this goes to a whole other level on a hand built, and essentially balanced and blueprinted AMG engine. With things so tight and precise, the oil may indeed need to lean toward the thin side, and because of the heat these things produce, obviously be on the heavier end up top (40).

You're probably generally safe in your climate, here in the hot summer of VA I'm considering going to 5W-40 on my next change, but DEFINITELY back to 0W-40 for the fall/winter

I know there's all sorts of backlash on who paid for what sticker and recommendation to be where, but if MB says M1 0W-40, that's good enough for me
