Has anyone tried a wider front tire?
I'm exploring my options on what I'm gonna do with the tires on my car since I don't trust them anymore. Pretty annoying as I wanted to go to Vossen 20's in the next few months but I guess that will have to wait a lil while longer.
Wondering if anyone has gone wider fronts on stock rims and if there has been problems with rubbing when turning or anything else to worry about? I know we want to keep the rolling diameters close front and back, <2% variance seems to be the acceptable range for difference? Would a 255/40/18 be a big issue or just look funny with the slightly taller tire sidewall?
Any input is appreciated.

Well i have 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20 rear.. i get a little rub when my steering wheel is almost all the way turned. Jus a little rub at the end. So if ur not planning on making too many Very sharp turns or quick Uturns you should be fine.

I'm thinking a mid price level tire now. Something along the lines of an NT555, NT-05, New G-Force Sport Comp 2, Toyo Proxes R1R etc. Don't wanna shell out too much as I'm still thinking about Vossen 20's in the not to distant future.
Maybe
Front 255/40/18
Rear 275/35/18

I'm currently running:
F: 18x9.5 | et28 | 255/40-18
R: 18x9.5 | et28 | 285/35-18
Wheels are square setup, but tires are staggered...ride height is lowered and have not rolled my fenders yet. I have minor rubbing in front at full steering lock going over a bump/dip in a parking lot. I also get minor rubbing with the 285 rears under full compression. Once the current tires wear out, I plan on running 275/35-18 front and rear to reduce understeer on turn in.
OP - I presume you're currently running stock E55 wheels (18x8 et30, 18x9 et39)?

Running
18x9ET32 255/40/18
18x10ET46 285/35/18
STAR lowered, no rubbing front and back, 0.7% difference, no issues. I'd like to go even meatier, but Michelin do not have anything wider in 18" for the PSS.

Yes I'm looking to put these on the stock rims and hope to have this set last me till I end up going with the Vossens sometime next year at this point I guess. Looking for the best tire that's not very expensive with the main focus being straight line traction from standing still that's also driveable and won't kill me in the rain so not a drag radial right now. lol

Ended up staying with stock front size and 10 wider on the rear to try and keep overall diameter as close as possible.
Went with the Pilot Super Sports due to all the great reviews and tirecreawler.com had a fantastic price plus free shipping and a $70 rebate if you buy 4 right now. $952.24 delivered. Plus a $70 mail in rebate.
$882.24 final price after rebate and I'm having my buddies shop mount and balnce em for free or peanuts and picking up the replacement certificates from Discount Tire.
Discount tire wanted about $1450 installed all said and done with certificates by me. Saving over $400 and getting everything still and I know who will be man handling my wheels. lol No free balance and rotation for life but these are directional and asymetrical so there is no rotating these anyway and I'll get em rebalanced for free or beer money if needed.
245/40/18 25.7" diameter 809 Revolutions per mile
275/35/18 25.6" diameter 814 Revolutions per mile
I was considering the 255/40/18 but they spec out at 26.0 and 799 Revs per mile and just figured I'd be safer with the 245 in the front. Don't wanna run into problems when the back tires wear down and the gap in size grows even further.
