front airmatic replacements?

My front right "shock" as well as my pump is shot on my 06 e55. Luckily I have a warranty. The problem is... the front right shock is "indefinitely" back ordered. What ever that means. All the dealership can say is that there is a back log of 60 units ordered from the past 6 months and they cant tell me when I will be able to get a new one.

Input.. advise? Arnott?

Shock Back Order

I had same dilemma when my LF went out in June. MB was way back ordered and would not even commit to a delivery date. Went with Arnott, less expensive which made warranty company happier, and excellent quality. Go with Arnott, you'll be fine.

Is your warranty through standard MB dealer certification, or is it a 3rd party? One of my co-workers got a 3rd party platinum warranty (think JM&A) and they didn't cover his airmatic system in his car...

I fear this happening because he said it cost him about $3000 to fix... :/

I put an Arnott strut on my CLS when I had it. Quality build and a lifetime warranty.

Chrysler warranty.. ok get this. The warranty only works at the dealership and the dealership wont install arnott parts. So i asked the Chrysler rep if i was supposed to drive the rental car he is paying for, for an entire year or more. They are discussing it.

My left front went down last weekend. Dealer said they were back ordered also, but he could have one on Sept. 16. Car is under Mercedes extended warranty. Gave me a GLK 350 loaner.

My left front went down Monday. My 3rd party extended warranty doesn't cover it (strut)... I ordered one from Arnott and will replace it myself.

This used to be the case and was part of the reason it was such a costly repair when having MB do the repair. (they changed both sides) There has since been a release from MB stating to only replace the affected side, reducing the cost of said repair. On my CLS, my strut failed at 55K. The other side was still functioning fine at 89K, when I got rid of the car. But it's your money. My reccomendation would be to wait until the other side fails before replacing a functioning part. The labor is completely independent for each side, so you save nothing by doing them together.

MB did that when it was still under warranty or after market warranty did that also, truth is that when one side fails the other side is affected as well

These are expensive cars and good maintenance will keep them running forever, do NOT skimp

"truth is that when one side fails the other side is affected as well"

So why didn't they replace all 4 then?

Front are struts, back are airbags
Secondly the front struts take much more of a beating than the back, all the engine weight is on the front

The same thing happened to my X5 4.8is. Front left went and 15k mi later, the front right went.

When one side fails, the other side will follow because it's being adjusted constantly to match the failed side.

Actually, the pump will also be in question because its duty cycle will increase due to the failed/leaking strut.

It's not a matter of "combined" labor, it's a matter of being stranded down the road when the other side fails. How much is your time worth to bring it back a second time?

^^^^^^^ +1

And it's true about the pump also, if you check in star the pump only goes on so often and when becomes over heated shuts off to protect itself from burning out but when struts are going bad the pump compensates by pumping air longer

Was in the same boat. Dealer had opened a special procurment case and there was no ETA. Threw a ****fit when the dealer would not install the Arnott and they magically "found" a strut the next day. Going to inspect the car tonight to see if it is actually a new part.

Probably best advice is to just take the car to an indy who will install the arnott with no *****ing.

RE: Dealer & Arnott

My dealer had no issue installing an Arnott, I venture they didn't want me in a loaner for ??? days until a new MB part was found.

I don't buy the "because one side fails the other will immenently fail" theory, know of a a couple of cars that had one side go out a year and even 18 months ago and are still running their other side without issue.

In my case the LF just died when I opened the drivers door in my garage, it hissed for about 30 seconds and the LF fender slowly dropped to the top of the tire. I knew what had happened, but started the engine to be sure, confirmed my suspicions, shut down, and immediately called MB roadside.

It is also great to have warranty that covers them.

You can extend the pump life by adding an air filter to the intake. That said, I do keep a spare on the shelf. Arnott had 'em new for $300 at one time, but I think that deal is gone now.

Just changed my pump a couple of months ago, but what do you mean add an air filter? Where? Do you have pics?

My LF failed in my garage too. I opened the trunk and heard a whining/hiss then the front went down.

"Front are struts, back are airbags"

But basically, the front's are shocks with air bags, just like the rears.

I see that you are afraid of someone who engages you in (hopefully) usefull dialog to try to understand the discussion more clearly. And if you can't support your claim you simply resort to childish replies. But thanks for your "advice" anyway!
