A few questions
So I totaled my CLK500 a few weeks ago, now its time for a new car. I've been entertaining the idea of jumping ship and buying a M5 but I'm thinking a E63 would suit me best.
I found a nice 09 Black on Black P30 heated & vented seats, sirius xm, the works.
The car has 44k on the clock.
I have a few questions
What to look for when inspecting? The M5 was prone to SMG failure which could cost 10k to fix is there anything major I should be asking about?
I would like to get an extended warranty on the car, do you recommend going through MB or a aftermarket company.
Finally and most importantly how much should I pay for a car like this?
Thanks
-David

I think an M5 would be more expensive to fix than a E63
A friend of mine replaced all 10 injectors at the dealership and the car has less than 40K miles.
Ive heard all sorts of stories with BMWs...Valvetronic..u name it as well as the SMG. Thats a problem car.
E63 problems to look for are the Valve Ticking. There is currently a class action lawsuit alleging that the motor has defects. Look it up here somewhere.
Airmatic Suspension is prone to failure.
I dont think the E63s had SBC brakes so your okay there.
P030 package has the two piece rotors which can get pricey to replace.
This car will eat tires alive as wth any of these cars. get an alignment
For ext warranty call bruce mendel with beck imports
Hes a vendor here and he is in the vendor database at the menu at the top.

Mine has 2pc rotors up front, the P030 cars have front and rear. The real differences with those were the factory LSD and up-rated suspension. Having lowered my car I'm not sure if I'd want it 50% harder.

I got mine from Carmax, pretty much because of the low expense of the warranty. 6 yrs/about 65k miles (carries me to 125,000), for about $2,200, bumper to bumper exclusive, basically all but maintenance/wear-and-tare. Everywhere else was either very shady, very expensive, or nonexistant

Extended warranties can be tricky. Airmatic components are major cost items that might not be covered under particular plans. I'm not sure if any plans actually cover Airmatic because they consider it a "wear and tear" component.
If someone has an extended warranty that specifically covers Airmatic components, please correct me.
All 2007-2009 E63's have the exact same two-piece rotors and they are very expensive to replace. The E63 brake rotor group buys are the best way to get replacement rotors. They don't come around that often, so you have to plan ahead and jump on one when it is available.
The E63 P30 package includes:
Alcantra Steering Wheel
Stiffer suspension - not sure if it is parts or just programming.
Different Wheels - Wider rear wheels.
186mph speed limiter instead of 155mph.
Limited Slip Differential
There are no modifications or enhancements to braking with the P30 cars.
After 1 year of E63 ownership experience, these are the items I would check before buying another E63:
1. Pano Roof - Does it work? Has it been serviced properly?
2. Airmatic - I don't know how one would check this out though but Airmatic can be expesive to replace. Luckily, Arnott now has replacement parts for both front and back, so the cost has gone done and their parts have lifetime warranties.
3. Engine - Any ticking noises? Startup noises? I would most definitely have an expert conduct some detailed diagnostics.
4. Brakes - How much life left on the rotors? I am at 60k miles and probably have about 10k left on them. Brake jobs on these cars are shockingly expensive - be prepared for that. There is info out there that the C63 one-piece rotors will fit our cars but I haven't seen anyone actually do it yet.
5. STAR Report - Will tell you if anything is wrong.
6. Service Records - Will tell you what was previously wrong with the car.
7. Engine and Transmission Mounts
8. A/C Components
I'll let you know if I think of anything else. I was unlucky with my car. The previous owner didn't take care of it and I spent about $9,000 on repairs in the first year. I couldn't get an extended warranty because I was shipping the car overseas to my duty location. My experience was probably the exception though and despite the costs, I don't regret the purchase. The enjoyment of driving it makes up for my individual repair costs - unless you ask my wife. Just keep in mind that you will have repair costs and they will be more than regular cars. Warranties are not going to cover everything. Different people have different experiences with the extended warranties.

The P30 package added about $8,500 to the original MSRP.
A non-P30 car with that many miles, looks like it would retail around $55k. That was ballpark for what I found online. You would have to factor in the added P30 package - so maybe $59k or so. That's just what I figured. Others might have some exact numbers.
