Sure its not a plastic bag that got on the exhaust? I caught one recently and took a while to burn off. Still some junk on the pipe but doesn't smell anymore at least.

+2 on the alternator. When my buddies fried, may have just been the regulator on it, but it smelled just like burnt plastic and electronics. He also had very light whitish grey speckles around the alternator area (bottom left side of engine while standing in front of the car). Good luck.

You might not notice it if you have a full battery. Turn the key to acc and put the display on outside temp. Press the reset stalk three times and you'll get your system voltage. You should get at least 13.5 volts if your alt is ok

Ok when u say reset stalk You are referring to The little knob that controls the brightness of your gauges correct ? I put key fob in turned it to the first position and press that thing and nothing.

/\ Yes, the little black knob protruding out of the gauge cluster area that you use for resetting the trip odometer and changing the brightness of the controls.

Look into the voltage regulator. Lot cheaper and many times that's all you need. The alternator itself is quite pricey - for an alternator.
NAPA has a rebuilt unit for $209 (price in my area) which isn't too bad and napa electrical is the best off the shelf in my opinion. A Bosch rebuild is around 4-450. Screw that. Lol
