Uh Oh. Another unhealthy sound, ideas?
Only when its cold out, mostly at low speeds and usually when going straight, there is a higher toned metal clanking sound. Just a quick clank, like if you were to hold a cowbell near the opening to prevent resonance and hit it with something. Sometimes loud, other times not. Sometimes extremely frequent, sometimes rarely. Its originating from the front left of the car. I asked my autos teacher and was told I needed to lubricate the slide pins on my front left caliper, or replace my "floating rotor", when I kept telling him they were not floating rotors. Any ideas?

Put the car on a 2 post lift to look for exhaust leaks or anything to cause the noise. Nothing. No leaks, loose parts, nothing. I'm puzzled. ANY clues on what this could be?

Not sure if this works on mb, but with the wheel off the ground, grab the tire at 12 and 6, and 9 and 3 o'clock and check for play/slop, tht can indicate a bad ball joint.
On the sway bars put the car on a 4 post and grab the sway bar end links and check for excessive play.
It's worth a try.

I will see of I can reserve a 4 post lift today or tomorrow at school. If not I will have Mercedes check it out, since the car is going in for repairs Monday, from an accident.

I've got access to a lift tomorrow and hopefully Monday, except now there is a squealing associated with the metal sound. They both only happen under the same conditions. slow speed breaking causes the squeak, and then it goes away after about 20 or 30 mph.

Could be your cats starting to go??? A pebble stuck between caliper and rotor. ?? Happened to me and eventually made its way out of the caliper/rotor.

I'd second the sway bar diagnosis if its more of a "clunking" sound. Was coming from my front left as well. I was experiencing it at slow speeds and mostly on sloped pavement. Sway bar has bushings that apparently can get mashed pretty good over time.

Had the car lifted today, on a 2 post. Everything seemed sturdy. Unless I am missing something. To be sure, can someone give me a whole Newby checklist on checking the components listed, and then some to check in the mean time? Also, I did observe what looked to be a really bad engine mount. How can I be certain they're bad?
