Oh crap, spark plug wire fell out?

So I'm still getting familiar with what I'm looking at in the engine bay of this car (I'm not very mechanically inclined to begin with).. I noticed a wire/cord sitting across other wires days ago but didn't know it was the spark plug wire.. I thought it was supposed to be there lol. Anyways if I'm standing on the passenger side of the engine bay looking in it's the 2nd wire from the left. Just sitting there unplugged.. (I'm going to attach a pic as soon as my phone battery charges grrrr)..

I'm guessing this is the source of the "exhaust leak" sound I was hearing from the engine bay? LOL..

Now I just need someone to explain to an idiot like me how to get at my spark plugs (just remove the airboxes?) so I can replace them (something I was planning to do today which is why I noticed this) and make a DIY since there doesn't seem to be one.

Its as simple as removing the intake (pull on tubes that go from grill to airbox and remove, set aside. Then firmly lift up on the holes where the tubes went, to remove the airbox. Be sure to undue the clip at the y pipe and the throttle body. Also, there will be a hose attached to the bottom of the riverside airbox. Just undo it and replace when putting back together.) Then unbolt the coil packs and set them aside, and mark youre spark plug wires to ensure correct reinstallation. Then just get your spark plug socket and ratchet and change them out. Put together in reverse order. that easy.

There is a very good DIY thread on here for the spark plug removal. Good luck.

Is it this one? https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...ark-plugs.html

Says m156 so I wasn't sure how similar to ours it is..

Quick question: since apparently the plug wire popped out or something, is this a sign of the "#8 cylinder" problem these engines have? How bad is it to run the car with this unplugged since it's been like this for at least a week and I've been beating on the car in the meantime thinking it was an exhaust leak somewhere.

^yeah so they can tell me I need a new engine or some ****? lol

Going to replace my plugs tomorrow and inspect some more. Probably order wires. I'd rather get familiar with my car and eventually know it top to bottom than drop it off with some stranger every time that doesn't give a damn about it except making $$$. Just saying lol.

What kind of experience do you have working on cars so far? Do you have someone with experience to help you out?

I have worked on a few cars a lot (nothing inside an engine or anything though) especially my 240 and Neon SRT-4 I used to own (never worked on 300C SRT-8, never had to lol) but I don't exactly know how to just work on some car I'm not familiar with.. which is why I want to get familiar with this one instead of paying (cough getting r*ped cough) to have it worked on. Lol. But yeah I live with a friend who knows what he's doing for the most part and can help me and if he doesn't know then we goto "the shop" to get something done where we are good friends with the owner..

Not sure why you asked but I won't do something to a car unless I know 100% what I'm doing, otherwise I will just get so far and then back out until I get help or more information. Which is why I'll be on here asking stupid questions regularly lol.

Sorry forgot to thank you for the explanation. Going to take a crack at it tomorrow!

hey when you do the spark plugs make sure that you mark your wires to where they go, because you can easily mess them up and get all kinds of rough idle... and plus while your in there check if your valve covers need to be changed if you see wet spots of oil etc. (very easy to do)... if yes than changing spark plugs will be way less painful, because you'd take the valve cover gaskets off first than take the spark plugs off second...

have fun ohhh and there are 8 each side if you didn't know lol and if you wanna get fancy spray your valve covers some nicer color other than that ugly stock look

here is my process

^I don't like to mess with engines or open them up or anything so replacing something like valve cover gaskets is likely out of my arena. But I'll give it a look and hopefully it's not too complicated and I'll get to coat the covers with some high temp paint and make them look pretty in the process.. thanks a million for linking me to more threads with info!

Use an open ended 17 mm wrench and push down on the wire at the metal part until you here a click. That means its seated on the spark plug securely.

Ok so it was actually the passenger plug wire furthest to the front of the car that came out, not sure how or why it was unplugged and laying all the way in the back in the middle of all the other plug wires.

That front plug was fine but the 2nd spark plug from the front is messy as hell (see pics), although it was fully tightened and everything. I'm not sure what this stuff is that's all over it, pretty sure it's not oil because the stuff is really sticky. It doesn't seem to be on any of the other plugs I've looked at so far.. wth is this stuff? lol

Looks to be oil leaking from the valve cover gasket. I have the same thing, only oil on one plug, and nor much but sticky.
