Rear tire size affects mpg reading on MF display?

Currently (and temporarily) running 285/35/18 rears, and it seems my mpg is reading lower than normal (by almost 10% based on a very reliable commute). I thought the speedo was based on the front wheel, not the rear? Or is it my imagination?

.
Do a huge smoky burnout and watch the speedo....

If the needle doesn't move, it's referenced to the front wheels....

Sorry, I don't have a smarter way to diagnose it.
