E55 then E63, now back to an E55
something causing drain on key battery

this is the third time now.
batteries last approx one month, then message on dash and shortly after the key is dead completely.
before - I didn't change the batteries for probably 18months.... hmmm.......

Do you have Keyless GO? If so you might want to keep the key fod far away from the car if you're not using it. The MB SA told me that the key fod is transmitting data to your car and that what drain the key fod's battery.

yes keyless go.
that's a very good point but I wouldn't say the key is ever too close to the car.
it remains in my pocket always, even when I ride with someone else/leave.
so basically if I'm inside 3-story house with car in garage, key in pocket at that time.

peter, would you consider that "close?"

The batteries are drained by use just like any other battery. If the fob is used for opening the car and locking the car the batteries do drain faster. If you use the fob to open the car from a long distance or lock the car, the batteries drain faster. The batteries will last the longest if you open the car with the door handle and push the buttons to lock.
