cluster disassembly
Does anyone know if its possible to disassemble the instrument cluster once its removed? I want to swap my gauge faces with the black ones from an e500.

yes you can disassemble the cluster, but removing the white marking is very hard since they are stuck on and the wires are ribbons which are very easy to break i would not do it.

That's actually very easy to do if you know what you're doing, just use a hair drier to heat up the gauges and it will peal right off. You should swap the needles as well to the white, that's the biggest difference right there. I did a 63 gauge swap, I'll post some pictures later.

Well, it turned out to be pretty easy. I bought a used e500 cluster and was able to swap the gauges and overylay. I just had to take the main circuit board from mine and put in the other cluster and everything works fine, including mileage. Just 5 plugs to swap the circuit board in out, not hair dryer, no soldering, no star.

I have taken apart many clusters from every last connector and wire. As Shardul has said it is very easy to break those ribbon cables and connectors, so be very careful because they are impossible to find and replace!

Yep 3 years later I just did it as well. It seems things like oil temp and probably the shift light are programmed in a different module and are fed through to the instrument cluster. I swapped a e63 cluster into my e55 and it reads as my e55 did with the rear boards swapped. I swapped the e55 cluster into the e63 and it shows oil temp just like the e63 cluster did so to me this proves the coding for the oil temp display/ reading is in another module and is fed to the cluster to display.

Does anyone know what happens if you just put the 63 cluster into the 55?I bought a working 63 cluster from another member. My problem is the clock and backlighting on my 55 no longer work. I’m afraid if I swap the boards they still may not work in the new one. The needles still Light up and the dimmer switch functions, Just no backlighting or clock. Losing the mileage function is not an issue to me, I would never sell my 55!
