I am pretty set on getting the performance package.

Is this lawsuit really a big enough reason to not get the car? Now, you guys have managed to scare the **** out of me.

I was actively looking for an '09 before all this started. There's now head gasket issues that have come up as well.

Also on the C63 side : https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...-concerns.html

If you end up buying be sure to get an extended warranty !
Anyone else know about this head gasket issue as I am going to see 2 e63's today and neither will have warranty! I know, I know I can buy the warranty...for probably $4k or more! In that case I will step up to a warrantied car or go back to looking for an e55 which still isn't out of the question!

I tried the C and it is too small for me. I looked at M5's and they are nice but seem fragile. I like CTS-V's and the years that are in my price range are still under warranty and are sometime CPO'd , so less to worry about with electronics and it shares chassis components with other cars, so rotors and stuff are fairly reasonable.

The E63 that had my eye is an '08 with 42k on it and had a "B" service at 40k miles. How much is this likely to turn into a huge money pit that I can't get out of and what kind of things can I expect to go wrong? Any advice?
Pay the money and have any car you look at inspected by a Mercedes dealer. Also, service history means everything. I have had my E63 since it was just over a year old, and we PILE the miles on. We are over 79k miles now and have always maintained it by the book, and the car has been almost bulletproof for reliability. Only recurring issue is that I have had 4 of the Keyless Go door handles replaced under warranty, but not much else. Also, if you buy one, an aftermarket warranty can pay for itself quickly. Just those 4 door handles alone almost paid for the warranty.

You will love the car. The sound of the 6.2 liter motor is unreal.

One of the cars is at a Merc dealer. What kind of warranty did you get and how much did it run?

Is there an aftermarket Warranty that is worthwhile?
Neither the Benz dealer or my mechanic seemed to have faith in them.

In my personal experience, you will want to hang yourself once you find out how bad all the aftermarket warranties are, the only one worth your while is the one that the dealer gives to pre-owned cars CPO, anything else is not worth it. Mine has paid it self already so it's worth it

I will find the information for mine. They have been perfect, and covered EVERYTHING I have ever asked for. Even the Mercedes dealer said they were amazed how much my warranty covered, and how easy they are to work with. Usually claims are approved AND PAID within 30 minutes. According to my dealer, they have never seen an extended warranty company cover the Keyless Go door handles, and my company has paid for 4 of them without issue. Paid for the motor mounts too just because I said I thought the car was idling rough.

The one that I am looking at currently is too old to CPO, that that doesn't help much.

i have learned from peoples experience and definitely wont gamble with such an expensive car like this one, i will only buy it if is CPO. same thing im doing as i look for a S63 and the 997 turbo. no need to go through a hassle with the warranty companies, my sanity doesnt have a price.

The funny thing is that the Mercedes dealer told me that the extended warranty that I have covers more than the CPO that they put on cars. I found that odd, yet refreshing.

Well sorry to say but from what i understand CPO is a warranty from the manufacture not the dealer, not just any car will get the cpo they have requirements to meet, an extended warranty won't cover more than that. I could be wrong but I hardly doubt that. Now if they cover wearing parts like rotors, tires, pads, services, I hardly doubt it cover more than a cpo, not to say you always have a deductible and from what I know, there is no extended warranty that covers fluids, hazmat materials, shop supplies etc, you have to pay that, in a cpo you don't.

I'll make a couple calls and find out better but I really doubt it's true they cover more.

I don't know. Just going off of what they told me. He told me people often think the CPO is the same as the original 'bumper to bumper' warranty, and it is not.

Okay....so my extended warranty is called 'The Mechanic' and I bought their 'Platinum Plan' that covered the most items. On the back it says, 'The Mechanic Program arranged by: Resource Automotive'.

Important to note...make sure to verify that your AMG car is covered. Many warranties EXCLUDE the AMG cars, or charge a higher rate for them. You want to make sure you don't buy a warranty for an E-Class only to find out your E63 AMG is not covered. The dealer that sold me my warranty had quoted me for the warranty without checking to make sure the E63 was covered. When I pushed him to check he found that the E63had its own warranty, at a much higher rate. Luckily they honored the price they quoted me on the cheaper one. Just saying...ask questions.

You are better off paying for your own inspection and getting a good third party warranty. If you go for CPO you will pay way too much for the car and no independent inspection so you have no clue what you are buying. Dealers will CPO almost anything after a very cursory inspection. MB dealer loved my third party warranty and piled on all sorts of repairs every time I took it in. These are generally NOT reliable vehicles but you could get lucky as some have.

I was talking about the warranty, but as long as you mention it...

I really find the dichotomy here interesting, the mixture of: "these are unreliable pieces of junk" to "these are great cars, parts are just expensive", seems to be about even. Which, if I was Mercedes, I would find disturbing.

The one that I am looking at is a 2008, so they have said that it is too old to CPO, it is at a Merc dealer that has had their service department go through it and gave it a clean bill of health, supposedly a car they even sold new.

Anyone here near Youngstown?

I could swear that I asked about it and they said it was too old. I'll ask again tomorrow. What does it cost the dealer to get the CPO from Mercedes? I know the Cadillac one is expensive.

A few years ago my SA told me it was $2k per vehicle. May or may not be true, however it's certainly gone up since then.
A car is not limited to 1 CPO.

There is a guy named Bruce Mendel who actually finds many AMG cars for board members here. He gets them @ below market value and inspects them nurmoerous times. I plan to buy a car through him when I am ready. He also gets 3rd party warranties that the board members pays for itself within a few repairs. Look him up and see if he can help you.
