What's the best place to get trans fluid for our E55's?

Any good online sources?

Freaking shop put Wolf's Head in my car and want to get it out and replace. I know it's not good to flush the cooler and all.. So would it mixing with that junk be bad?

 

yes, that is the correct fluid although i would buy 15-20 qts since you contaminated it with non-MB fluid.

disconnect the cooler return line, drain and fill 3-4 times idling the car 5-10 mins in between. this should get most of the old fluid out.

once this is done drop the pan and change filter, gasket and harness plug. reinstall and refill to proper level.

it should be good to go.

Now, I read somewhere that completely draining the fluid is bad? Is this true? I don't see any reason behind it other than maybe trapped air... But still not sure..

 

you cant just drain all the fluid. There is no torque converter drain plug on these cars ... hence why i would replace as much fluid as possible using the method described above.

 

I picked up some shell. ATF from Ryder fleet.

 

I would be very careful with servicing transmission. If not done right (proper procedures/tricks/temprature etc), could face costly repairs in near future . I would leave this to the experts; I would recommend getting quote from various independent MB shops. In DC/VA area you can get a transmission flush from a great indy MB shop for less then $400.

Sent order upside down.
Three bottles had ruptured caps and all the fluid spilled into the box.

Looks like it. Part number should be 001-989-68-03-13 (For 722.6 5SPD or 722.9 7SPD), MBZ approval: 236.14, ATF 4134 for the 03-06 E55.

 

Mercedes spec 236.10 -> 236.12 -> 236.14
Imo, as long as the fluid you are using meets one of those specs you are fine. To answer your question, 236.14 is the latest spec, and also the one you linked to.

Just because the 236.14 spec is the newest, and is backward compatible for the older transmissions, does NOT mean that it may be the best for our 722.6 5 speed transmissions. I quote:

 

Mine is C63 and I too am really leery of a DIY on trans fluid drain. The weird "break off" filler tool, the required temp at fill and other things unique to MB are somewhat intimidating. These must somehow be balanced against the (?confidence") that the procedure will be followed at the dealer.

Also after scouring these threads I found some chatter that a small drain plug DOES exist on the C63 torque converter but it must be rotated to be seen.

 

Checking http://royalpurpleconsumer.com/ today, Royal Purple is stating:
"PLEASE NOTE: Max ATF is NOT recommended for the following applications ... Mercedes Benz 236.8, 236.12, 236.14 & 236.15"

Notice, not 236.12 now either! However, they DO state:
"Max ATF is recommended in vehicles requiring any of these automatic transmission fluids: Mercedes Benz 236.1, 236.2, 236.3, 236.5, 236.6, 236.7, 236.9, 236.10, 236.11"

I just spoke with Jim in Tech Support at Royal Purple. They definitely recommend their Max ATF for the 722.6 5 speed automatic transmissions.
(He said that they will not be recommended by the OEMs as Royal Purple does not/will not pay the licensing fees often required by OEMs to be "licensed".)

More importantly, he stated that Royal Purple does NOT have the low viscosity fluids as mentioned earlier, and he is not sure if they will provide the low viscosity fluids (that pealpower reported likely the cause of "shifting issues/soft shift ,etc"). So Royal Purple Max ATF does sound like a preferred fluid for our 722.6 five speeds...

As far as the Shell ATF 134 as mentioned earlier: That appears to have changed:
"Shell ATF 134 is a premium semi-synthetic automatic transmission fluid designed for use in Mercedes Benz 7 speed transmission. Meets MB approval 236.12 and 236.14."
Doesn't this mean that they have switched to the newer, lower viscosity fluid for fuel consumption purposes (which also likely causes the newer fluid's "shifting issues/soft shift ,etc")???

Fuchs 00004330401. It states:
"For Mercedes models with 722.6XX electronic 5-speed automatic transmissions, NOT for later model 7-speed 722.9xx automatic, please verify type of transmission. Fuchs is an OE supplier to Mercedes and this meets MB standards 236.10. Up to 9 liters per car with complete drain, 4.5 - 5.0 liters on service flush only."
However, the photo shows Fuchs Titan ATF 3353 which is described here. It states:
"Ultra high-performance DEXRON III-generation-ATF for automatic transmissions as well as any other ATF-applications. Developed for the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz 7-step-automatic transmissions (NAG 2), applicable as well for the predecessing 5-step-automatic transmissions (NAG 1). Offers fuel-efficiency potential. Specifications & Approvals: MB-APPROVAL 236.12"
Checking the other Fuchs ATF fluids I find that:

So 3353 is spec 236.12 and preferred, but 4134 is the newer low viscosity spec 236.14 with "shifting issues/soft shift ,etc".

You can get Shell ATF 134 at your local shell distributor, around $60 or so for a case of 12 quarts. Shell's website lists the headquarters of their distributors, but the individual distributor may have multiple sites in your state.
