Will my car need a tune if?

Hi

I have an 03 E55 W211 shape. Next week I am considering:

1) Fitting K&N air filters
2) Splitting the intercooler coolant system and fitting a Johnson CM30 pump
3) Removing the centre resonator/muffler from the middle of the exhaust system and fitting a straight thru 3" pipe and still retain the rear mufflers.
4) Maybe/just maybe fitting a higher performance heat exchanger for the intercooler system.

If I do all the above modifications which are very cost effective will I require a tune? I understand the car will run much quicker with a custom tune BUT can the car be safely driven hard with the above hardware changes and retaining the factory tune for now?

Regards,

OZZYAMG

Yes it will be fine since you are not adding more boost

Yes you can keep driving the car without tune after those changes.

Hi again

Should I keep on using the standard heat exchanger along with the newer one I install OR should I remove the older heat exchanger and just use the newer high performance model I install?

I was also thinking of installing "WaterWetter" in the intercooler system.

Water wetter will help a bit in cooling, definitely a good idea. Just remember if it drops below freezing outside VERY bad things will happen if it freezes. Water wetter will do nothing to stop it from freezing when it gets cold.

Hi

The Killer Chiller seems like a great idea, however I like to use the full capacity of the aircon system to cool down the cabin of my car in the Melbourne hot summers and I love my aircon. The Killer Chiller website states that the aircon in the cabin will not be as cool anymore after fitting a Killer Chiller which I prefer to have over performance.

Read up some on K&N air filters in general, they allow a lot of dirt to pass through. The factory MB filters do a great job of keeping the dirt out of your $30K engine!

I would stay away from K&N filters at all. I used to get check engine light in my porsche, back in the days all the time and my dealer strongly advised against it.

Hi

Ok it seems to be the general consensus that K&N air filters may cause some issues. I suppose if thats the case I will continue to use the standard air filters and try adding some TTM air intakes for some increased performance.

Please keep the replies coming as I am happy to hear peoples thoughts.

I have TTM's scoops, they're cool and I'm perfectly happy with them. That being said don't buy them for the "performance" they'll add. Honestly for as cheap as you can have Eurocharged put a tune on your car I can't figure out why you would be avoiding a tune?

Hi

I am not avoiding a tune as such, I will get a tune just not in the near future. And I am only wanting to organise a tune once and once only and when that happens will be the same day I fit a different pulley to the supercharger so till then I am looking at everything I can fit that allows me to use it for now WITHOUT needing a tune to drive the car.

OZZYAMG

I'm just wondering, what is the reason for waiting until you put a bigger pulley on? Eurocharged offers free retunes for any changes you make down the road, so you could add the pulley later on and get it retuned for free at that time. The single best bang for your buck is going to be a tune!

Hi

I joint these forums back in May 2012 and have read lots of posts and threads since then. I thought I had spent enough time reading and reading and reading and thought it would be a good time to start posting?

My sincere and genuine apologies if you think this thread if full of misinformation and fail.

To: PACougar the reason I was waiting to fit the pulley last was to in fact see if I could be happy with the cars performance without having to increase the boost, I also never stated I had chosen Eurocharged as my preferred tuner.

Regards,

OZZYAMG

I never said you did, I'm simply suggesting a course of action. I hate to see you waste your time and money going about things in the wrong manner.

Hi

Well I have started shopping and buying some bits and pieces for my E55. I am now also led to believe that if I was to fit a smaller pulley for my blower I could safely use it without a tune up to the day it is correctly tuned, no matter how long that period of time maybe. The only difference is that I wont be creating any extra power and all the increased boost will just be released through the bypass valve. But no damage should be done to the blower and more paricularly the engine.

OZZYAMG

Whats the issue with getting a tune? They are dirt cheap these days.

Hi

I will be getting a tune, it's just a didn't want to get it tuned till I fitted all my hardware modifcations first and that due to time constraints and $$$$'s is going to take me a couple of months. I estimate to get the car tuned this year but between now and then I may do another 10,000 miles and some spirited driving!

I wouldn't do that, depending on the bypass valve with out a wideband o2 seems like a very bad idea for 10K miles. Plus what's the point of putting it on now even if you went with the assumptions above?

Get the EC tune... After you buy their tune they will reflash you for free after you get new mods - honestly it is a NO BRAINER

After the 1st of the year they began charging a small fee to new customers for re-flashes. That being said I would still go with EC and it is a no brainer!
