W211 E55 cutting out. Fuel starvation?

Coming back from the coast after travelling about 1100km without a hassle - except for the collapsed R/F shock and keeping an eye on the pump and 'stop, car too low' message - my car suddenly upon acceleration back fired and 'hiccupped' a number of times.

Pressing the pedal only 'smothered' the engine with no power. I gently nursed it but after about 15km the engine just stopped running.

After waiting about 10 minutes I tried starting her and she did and performed well for another 15km when she died again.

I waited another few minutes again and made it the last few kms home.

My thinking is dirty fuel / air lock / fuel filter blocked resulting in fuel starvation? I must also mention that at the last fuel stop it took quite a while to fill the tank. Seems to have a lot of air locks. It was also very hot - 34C+.

Can someone help please?

Did this happen right after your last petrol fill up? Did it throw a check engine light?

About two hours after last fill up.

No engine light or 'malfunction'.

No mods yet except for all cats removed. We don't have shops selling go fast(er) goodies here like you have up there.

Only have had it for the last 3 months. 127k kms (79k mi).

Recent major service at agents.

Fantastic car, VERY impressed so I am prepared to spend some money to have it perfect but it needs to be RELIABLE in the first place - which it isn't at present.

I have my doubts now. I only did one long 3000km trip and have two major defects already. What's next???

seems like a bad CPS. After the sensor cools down it will start to work again until it heats up a bit and then fails again.

I just had a similar issue, dealership diagnosed and repaired - Crank positioning sensor. Replaced and not having any issues.
