Repair Frequency
1) I've had my 01 E55 since Feb 01 and have only minor problems with the car. I have 29,500 miles on the car now. A few quibbles: The gas gauge won't go all the way to full (about 2 gallons off), I had to get my remote transmitter replaced under warranty, and my seat squeaks (but hey, I'm 250! I'd complain too). Other than the transmitter, I haven't made a claim. I'll probably have them look at the gas gage and seat on the 30k tuneup.
2) People that pay 60 or 80 grand for a car expect perfection. They are likely to get the least little thing repaired because with kind of investment it should be PERFECT! If I had a Chevy Malibu and I got some windnoise, I would kind of expect it and most likely not complain to get the seal looked at.
how bizarre. I have the same gas gauge issue in my '01 E55. Mine's is also off two gallons. I've been trying to get gas at different locations to see if it's the gas. So far, noticed one particular Shell station which consistently is off two gallons when I fill-up. Other gas stations (Chevron) are off less than one gallon. Anyway, this issue will be mentioned on my B Service due later in the year.
I think you hit the nail on the head!!! I deal with this on a daily basis, for example: a client of my bought a 2004 CLK320 coupe on which we replaced the standard steering wheel with a Wood/Leather wheel. Well, during the process the tech got some grease on the sensor that allows the steering wheel to tilt/telescope and it would not work. When he brought the car back in he calls me to tell me that they had to replace the whole steering column!!!! All the tech did was take a cover off and replace the sensor, Good as new!! If I has listen to him I would have thought the car was a lemon!! Moral: Sometimes people like to blow things out of proportion & make them worst than they really are!!!
In our travels we often stay at rather extravagant places and when people are spending close to $1000 a night they expect presidential service and perfection in all ways.....and do some of them ever get nasty and childish about unfulfilled expectations.
I genuinely admire the staff of those places for putting up with all that whining day in and day out.
Same with luxury car sales to some extent I'm sure.

I believe that the biggest reason for the frequency of repairs is that with its warranty just about anything is free to fix and not even the amount of money spent for the car.
I remember that in 1994, an SL or S class was somewhere $90k-$100K and their quality wasn't any better than today. Small stuff broke, there were some odd noises or vibrations and the cars had just as much plastic in them as they have today.
My 2 cents
