E55 Wheels - Vermiculite?
The new 2004 Mercedes-Benz AMG catalog states this:
"E55 WHEELS US A CORE OF VERMICULITE, AN INNOVATIVE WEIGHT-SAVING MATERIAL FROM OUR CHAMPIONSHIP DTM CAR"
Vermiculite defined:
"any of various micaceous minerals that are hydrous silicates resulting usually from expansion of the granules of mica at high temperatures to give a lightweight highly water-absorbent material"
I have heard that many new AMG wheels can not take chrome plating because the wheels are very porous. Maybe this is due to the Vermiculite?
Strangely, the catalog also lists all the AMG Double Spoke design wheels as "Polished" for E55, C32, S55, CLK55, CL55 & SLK32. I thought they were painted.
