I also changed the mesh behind the star and used a wire mesh (home depot) very similar to the mesh used in the front spoiler.

I hear you--I have been holding off on going the aftermarket Nav route, hoping that I could do some type of retro fit---after talking with MBUSA---I get the not feasible answer---but they did not answer my real question--"is it possible?" I am still searching for more info on this topic--let me know if you get an updates here. I am still glad I got my car when I did--despite the lack of Command---I had waited long enough---and I have been enjoying the hell out of it.
I sold my '02 M5 in Nov'02 for $65k---a trade in---which was low---(at least got tax advantage) but the market was awful then, and probably still is.
