Doesn't shift when I want it to shift!

2004 E55...When I have the car in manual mode and hit the paddle shifter it just doesnt shift when I hit the right side paddle, when I use the shifter it doesnt shift either...unless I am going 20 miles an hour. It works fine (both paddle and shifter) when going slow but when I am anywhere near full throttle it just seems that it wont shift until I let off a little. The tach reaches high 6k and I am scared to over rev it so I let off and this is why I try and shift at let's say 6500 and it will not shift. Leaving it in sport mode it does the same thing...seems like it wants to bury the tach before it shifts! Can anyone explain this? Does it want to rev higher? Again, the paddles and shifter work when shifter at low speeds...I just don't get it. Thanks

The shifts are delayed, even with a tcu tune they still don't shift until a good 300rpm after you hit the stick or button to shift on the throttle. Not like the newer fast shifting transmissions. It sucks, just have to compensate, if you want to shift at 6500 then hit the button at 6200. I don't know about with just a ecu tune but tcu tune brings shift rpm to like 6700rpm. With just ecu tune I was at like 6400rpm when car shifted on its own.

I agree, I don't like the paddle shifting at all... I just leave it in drive.

...but even in drive it will not shift before 7k rpm's which I have never done because I let off before it gets to 7k to allow it to shift for fear of blowing it up. If I have it in manual and hit it to the floor and shift at 5k rpms I will see 6k, then 6.5k and I am like WTF...it just will not shift until I let off a little to allow it to shift! Also, I think it only does this in 1st gear...I think that 2nd to 3rd it will shift at like 6600 or so. There must be something wrong...and it did this before the tune so the tune has nothing to do with it just FYI. Maybe I should just try it once and see when it will shift but one time may be the last! lol

Try this,
https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...set-works.html

Then tell us how many miles on your trans fluid, it is a good idea to change out (not flush) trans fluid & strainer @ 45,000 mi intervals, "sealed for life" is BS

The car has a rev limiter, so it shouldn't be a problem to let it try and shift. I smacked mine numerous times because of loss of traction.

I knew it had a rev limiter but really never gave it thought...so you're right, just lay into it and don't worry. I took it out today but hadn't tried what I mentioned yet. I did smack it from 50mph and I must say that that is the sweet spot, it really pulled nicely...I never go all the way to the floor but figured it was time. Anyway, I clearly watched the tach and it shifted at 6600 so I guess it downshifts to second at 50mph? I am thinking that it can't be 3rd can it? I really need to drive it more and know this stuff. lol... Just too busy this time of year. I will try the first to second romp a little later.

2nd gear is where it should be at 50mph.

Guys be kind these cars are old when you press the paddle a telegraph message has to be sent to the transmission, read, and then shifted

No reason to be scared of 7000rpm anyways. Let it shift when it wants to and enjoy the ride.

If you have it floored and ask it to shift earlier than redline, the trans will ignore your upshift request and shift itself. That is normal, as far as I've ever experienced.

Now, if you are asking for an upshift at mild throttle input and it holds the shift until redline, then that sounds like an issue to me.

Then again, I could be completely misunderstanding you.....

That is what it does pretty much so I guess it is normal and I was just worried about over revving. I won't be a wuss anymore! lol Thanks all

Now go back and read the link I posted (click on it) so that you know how to clear the "adaptations" from the TCU.
The TCU in our 722. box learns your driving style and if the car has been dogged around town it will shift as such. The sneaky ECU reset returns the TCU to the most aggressive shift mode.
