Car for Sale/Looking for replacement, lots to consider
Gents,
It looks like the beast is going up for sale in the next couple of weeks, maybe sooner. My question is what sort of numbers can I expect to get for her?
05, 86K miles, Fidelity Platinum to 100K miles or December 25th of this year. Car has 180MM pulley and some VRP shorty's. Condition is good, everything you would expect out of a DD 2005. It has been meticulously maintained inside and out but age is a losing battle. I have all stock parts including stock wheels (currently CF 5's). Also, all 4 airmatic shocks have been replaced with Arnott struts which offer a lifetime warranty. The rear ones are almost brand new and the front were replaced with in the last year, year and a half.
My thought is for quick sale maybe $17K-$18K? If I want to wait i can try for $22,500?
Most recent pic:
The second part of the post is what the hell do I replace her with. My budget is somewhere around $40K-$45K. I have the following choices:
07-08 BMW M5 - No matter how much TQ we have, this car is f-ing amazing. Add Eisenmann and you have a real authentic race engine sound.
07 BMW M6 - Same as above except you can get a convertible. Plus there's something about a lowered M6 that really gets me going. I saw one black on black slammed (front was about .5 lower than rear) on some 20' HRE's and I almost got in an accident staring at it.
09 ML63 - Probably the most responsible choice. Sort of.
In full disclosure, I am obsessed with my beast. Always have been. However, living in LA I really don't get to enjoy her as much as I'd like. I mash the pedal and 3 seconds later I'm on the breaks because I'm going 70 MPH. That's no way to live. Also where I live, and I HATE to admit this, the M5 is just a step more classy than the 55. The 55 is a true petrol head dragster but the M5 is just a bit more Bond if you know what I mean.
In addition please help with another question, you real car guys, why are our 55's such crazy beasts when both the 55 and the M5/6 are rated at about the same 0-60 1/4 mile? In fact, 0-60times.kom has the 55 .1 seconds slower in 0-60.
Can one mod a BMW M5/6 to where you actually get the same sensation you would get from a modded AMG? If you say no than how come a number of videos exist of the two cars side by side and they look about the same? It's never a clear laugh in your face victory for either car and I've seen a half a dozen vids with both cars victorious.
Or do I just say screw it all and buy a 06 low mileage CLS55 and mod it to hell for the extra $10K I'll have left over in the "budget"?
I look forward to your thoughts and ideas..

You have omitted 2 great cars that are in your budget...
996 Turbo and the CTS-V.

Personally - I have lost interest in the 911 Turbo/CLK63BS, and am now after a -V. Sooo much more car for the money.

^ Good call on the V Justin. The turbo I respect highly, I just can't get over the interior of the 996. The 997 is a huge step up but also an additional $40K for a decent one..
Is the V as "good" a car as the M5/6? I'm sure it's beastly like our 55's but does it have that..what the French call "I dont know what"? lol

You say you cant enjoy the E55 in LA, but want an M5/M6 and mod it to get the same sensation as the E55. So you would be in a similar situation as the E55? sort of contradicting yourself, but just wanting a newer ride then yes buy something newer.

All good choices you've listed there. It's a good time in life when that is your dilemna
17-18k will be a great deal for someone in the market for an E55. I bet you can get at least 20 for it without too much trouble. If it were mine I'd list it for 23 (locally and on auto trader, not here) and see what happens.

1) Can't you get a C63 for in the $40s? Get a four door if you want a sedan again. Similar performance to the E55 - smaller car.
2) I loved my E60 M5 - I'd stay away from the 06s and 07s if possible, stick with 08+ if you can find one in the $40s range with decent miles. As far as modding, not cheap but they do have nice gains once you open up the exhaust (e.g. headers/mid section). NOTHING close to a pulley/tune, though.

M5 is a nice car... amazing sound and it is really satisfying and rewarding stomping on it. The E55 gives you that brutal torque in the low RPM and the car is just so refined that it doesn't even feel scary. If I were to get an M5, I'd get a manual... the SMG pumps are very faulty in those cars.

I've recently been looking at V wagons they will do everything you want. I had my choices down to the ML63 and the X5M. I ended up with the M its a blast to drive but I've been dying to get back into a car again so I'm not sure you will fall in love with the ML.

If the sensation and all you are looking for you will regret the day of your life when you will end up selling E55 to get a M5.
In city you will hate how high of rpms you'd have to go to actually "get a feel" of what's going on or the "pull" our E55 have a lot of low tq so 3000 rpm is enough. SMG would be a nightmare.
I am not sure about manuel M5 though maybe better ?
Not sure about Cts-V either but I see so many people leaning towards it cuz it gives the same feel as our beasts (power wise) and then easy on the pocket as well for repairs and what not I assume ?

Where are you hearing they have engine problems?
That's like saying the E55 tranny is weak.

17-18k is a pretty sweet deal considering the mods plus warranty.
It's unfortunately true that the M5 holds a bit more panache than the E55 here in SoCal. Here's the thing though, the M5 will only really start to open at those higher freeway speeds anyway which makes it mostly useless if you can't go above 70 mph most of the time. You will definitely notice the loss of low end torque compared to your 55.

I don't get it, changing a 4 doors sedan to other 4 doors M5 and pay extra $20K on top ? I rather buy a SL55/600 for $40K. I really think M5 is over priced compare to our 55. And prepare some repair $$$ because BMW can be very problematic in electronics. I had a 745Li few years ago, spent $6K in 7 months of ownership. Sensors failure, alternator failure.... you name it. Good luck !

Funny cause I was going to the nationals baseball game after work and see this Porsche 911 weaving behind me and pull next to me. I have three coworkers w me and told them watch this. Hammer down and 6 carlengths down the toll road look down and at 115 and let off Of course he did a fly by on me after. Felt good to drive the e55

Interesting, thanks for your input...
How fast can one make a CLS63? Someone mentioned turbos, is that a big expensive build or is it as basic slapping on pulley and tune?
The only reason I said CLS55 is because I have experience with the motor. Can one get good power from the motor? I can get something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2008-MERCEDES-BENZ-CLS63-AMG-P2-SUNROOF-NAV-ONLY-47K-MI-TEXAS-DIRECT-AUTO-/400482636727?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item5d3ea013b7
...and still have a decent budget for some engine mods. Does anyone here have a CLS 63? Are they good?
I should be able to find a CLS55 for even less and have more money for some proper mods. So many good choices..

I still don't understand the comment when you said you hit 70mph to fast and needing to shut down, any fast car you get will have this same problem, you may never be happy lol.
