Pulley Upgrades

I'm deciding whether or not I want to upgrade my pulley to get more boost out of the super charger. From what I know so far (and correct me if I am wrong) there are two different sizes to upgrade the pulley. I've seen 170mm and 180mm. Does anyone know how big the stock pulley is? Also which pulley is the best one for performance?

Thanks Guys

Can of worms opened! So many choices you can go as high as 195-200 and then always *** the smaller SC upper pulley. As for ease and few worries the upper SC pulley but it all depends on what your power goals may be.

My goal is to get to 525-550 horsepower and 600tq as long as the car still runs smooth (like a luxury car). I wouldn't want to make it loud or sound like a hot rod. LOL! Do the bigger pulleys make more horsepower? When you said ease and less worries what do you mean?

If you go for a larger crank pulley there can be a fear of it falling off and this can cause lots of damage. A installer who has done a ton of them should ease your worries. I had my org 180 for long time but them had to replace it from the rubber failing after many many miles and lots of heat. Swapped back out for another 180 and it fell off. I had my new 195 pinned and have no worries. If those are your goals then a 180 is the smallest you need to think about. My mods and power levels are below and are what you are looking for. Many ways to get there but that's what i picked. Drives just fine to me, a little harsh sometimes down low but not all the time. If you keep your cats and resonators it will still sounds mainly stock. I like the sound of mine with the headers and not cats as people don't think a Benz will sound that way and its not like Mustang loud.

What do you think of the 170mm pulley vs 180mm? So you are saying its safer to have the 170mm correct?

Size doesn't really make any one safer. The bigger debate is welded or pressed style. I will pick welded over the rest these days. And a 180 is great and will get you close to your goals and generate a lot less heat. Once you start going bigger you need to address cooling. You still need to upgrade the pump and split the system. Then you can start into larger HE and trunk tank, no HE and a Killer Chiller, Killer Chiller and a trunk tank or even Killer Chiller with meth and a tank. So many options and opinions on cooling too.

I wanted to avoid a trunk tank to start with but even with my KC and meth setup I feel one is in order now for faster recovery. The meth will drop the IATs while spraying but after the fluid is still heated pretty high. I certainly need to be able to hold more fluid so when I add the smaller SC pulley is when I will add the trunk tank.

Interesting goal.

If you can handle it, here are several different cars with different setups. Different mod lists and tuners but power and times are around the same or higher.

As far as pulley, if I had to do it again, I'd go with 180. Rember cooling is very important.

Are you looking for 525 at the wheels or flywheel, a stock 55K will be anywhere between 380-410 at the wheels.

Savman: I am looking for 525-550 at the flywheel. It would be great if I could get to 500 at the wheels but that isn't my goal. If I were to do ECU tune and pulley upgrade (170mm or 180mm) would I need to do anything else? I heard cooling is pretty important. How much power would I gain with an ecu tune and pulley upgrade?

In that case no need for crank pulley just go for a smaller supercharger pulley, tune, heat exchanger. You may as well change the IC pump at the same time as the heat exchanger (unless you know that it is fairly new).
You shoud be somewhere between 550-580 at the flywheel

SavMan: Do you recommend doing all these mods at the same time or at different times? If you did these mods at different times which would you do first?

You will need the pulley & tune together, heat exchanger and pump together also make sense although not essential to do at the same time as the pulley/tune these engines suffer from heat in stock form so if it were me I would do it all together.

If your looking for 550 bhp, then I would recommend: Smaller supercharger pulley, tune, larger Heat exchanger, split the cooling and upgraded pump.. You will have a reliable fast car that would be very daily derivable.

Toss on a set of Kleemann headers with the smaller SC pulley and you'll be very happy. I personally believe if you're going to jam more air into the motor you should help remove some as well!

What about upgrading the injectors to 550s and getting a looped rail? Also the 82in tb? Has anyone done before and after dyno runs after getting these mods?

I did all of my mods at once but remember every car is different as well as the person who owns it.

A good set of headers, a HE and a tune IMO is the best place to start. It doesn't make sense to jam more boost into the motor right off the bat without first addressing the sub par exhaust system

This is exactly what I would do.

I don't know how much money you have to spend on mods, if you can't get it all at once then I would first get a tune, next I would get a bigger heat exchanger and then I would get a set of headers (Kleemann are cheapest with good bang for buck) and get a retune for the headers. If you can get them all at the same time well even better or if you have even more to spend you could get some long tube headers instead but the price will go up quite a bit.

With your 550 crank goal, do yourself a favor and stay away from a bigger crank pulley or smaller supercharger pulley. You will be making the car less consistently fast due to more heat from the added boost. You will also be causing the car to have less traction from the increased low end torque. Stay with stock boost, get the tune and feel the difference and then when you swap to headers (like Kleemann) you will again gain another roughly 35-40hp (crank).

You can get the tune and heat exchanger as well as Kleemann headers for about $1900
