Beware of these oil filters

I use Mobile 1 5-40 with NAPA Gold filter. The filters used to be an OEM MANN filter from Germany repackaged in a NAPA box.

Now they are garbage from China. Mine sucked in like an hourglass trying to get oil through the paper, the string wrap was unwinding, and the o-rings squashed flat after just a few months - maybe minutes.

They can still get the MANN filter but you have to special order it.

Some of the dealers i see have switched to 5w-40 or Penzoil now from Mobil1, since Penske owns a few of the dealershps around here. But i still use 0w-40 european formula.

As far as the filters, get them online cheaper, or sometimes i use the purolator, which is a rebadged mann filter.

5w-40 is the new standard they are using in the steelerships

I still use 0w40 since we live in SoFLa. and its been fine for the car for 8-9 years.
How much is the mann filter?

Dirt Scooters
I would always use the OEM filter or Bosch filter. Used a off brand filter once and changed the oil after a couple hundred miles and filter was sucked in and collapsed.

Did AMG switch again? Last time they went with 5W-40 was in 2007 and they had some issues in the valve train on the 6.3 and switched back in less than 3months.
I would bet Mercedes did change, but I doubt AMG has. Look on the Mobil 1 bottle the 0W-40 has "AMG" on it, don't get me wrong cause I would like to run 20W50, but that AMG approved sauce seems to work pretty good.
On the filter NO PAPER get OEM fleece (white) Pelican and AutohausAZ $7.00
new plugs and copper washers, drain both sumps. FSS forever

This place is a joke.
We use Mobil 5W-40 at the dealership. And don't use cheap filters, ever.

They switched to the "ESP" Emission Systems Protection, because of the lower amount of wear inhibitors which can potentially reduce the life of the catalytic converter which must be warranted for much longer than the rest of the car.

I use 0W-40 because of the higher wear inhibitors. If the primary cats go, I'll cut them out and call it a mod.

I picked up 2 filters at the dealer for around $15 a piece. A local high end dealer did an oil change before I bought my car used and I'm not sure what filter they used but it was tan and looked like paper. Also sucked in like an hour glass and it looked kinda furry, little hairs coming apart on the filter. This was after only 5-6k miles. Glad I wanted to change it early. I also picked up a couple oil changes worth of 0w40 European formula Mobil 1 as it was on sale for $5 a quart at the time.

Hmmm, so 0w-40 is better. I quit using it cause it's scary thin.
Never ment to use a cheap filter, they slipped one by me.
I change oil every 2-4k. I like this motor and the oil comes out plenty dirty enough to justify the expense.

Since when was a 40wt oil considered thin?

The first number only relates to viscosity in winter months. When the oil reaches 100*c, it becomes a 40wt. Trying to pump 40wt through a frozen motor won't ever be a pleasant experience for it.

I only use filters from MB, as all the other filters seem to get the O rings and filter sucked out of them.

Well 2-4K is what dino oil should be changed out at, you can run the Mobil 1
0W-40 to 10K. So you can go a little longer on the engine oil and use the money saved to change the ATF every 40K miles.

05 ML-500 , 03 CLK5.5 AMG has left the Garage
Don't laugh to hard

I'm with Yacht Master , I would prefer to use 20w-50.in this tropic Florida Climate & do so in my AMG (Klotz 20w - 50 with Estorlin ) But only with the OEM oil filter . The OEM filter has never collapse , even 36* morning temps in Blowing Rock, N.C. Now I have to Admit , there is Tappet noise , on cold start up , if I let the car set over 60 days.

The ML-500 doesn't Like Klotz 20w -50 at all. I ended up with a Brand called Total Quarts 9000 Energy 5w - 40 100% synthetic. meets Merc"s 229.5. Brewed in Linden , NJ. at the Fina plant.
