What is your oil temp? E63 owners or those who have E63/CLS63 Gauge Cluster in E55.
Just wondering what kind of engine oil temp you guys are seeing with the e63 clusters. For those who are wondering what it is. Its the oil icon that blinks in center of cluster until fully warmed up.
My oil cooler fan on my 2005 E55. is making some funny noise. Im seeing 97-98 degrees celcius during normal driving. Is that normal?
Does anyone know if it will light up red if you get it too hot (hard driving) Or will it just keep displaying higher temps.
Just want to know if my temps are OK.

I think most of the responses are folks reading the coolant temps as 100 * C = 212 * F which is where the coolant should be normally...
Oil temp should be 180 *F or ~80*C....If you are seeing 212*+ F that is a tad too high (unless you are racing, but even then you should keep it below 200* F)...

my numbers are definitely the oil temp in degrees C... if you browse the C63 forum they have a similar thread and all their M156 motors operate at the same temps...
Also the Oil temperature display on the cluster will actually flash until the oil reaches 80* C... The owners manual even states to keep the revs below something like 4500 RPM and not be too aggressive until the oil temp is above 80...

Normal oil temps on E63 99-103 degrees C
Clk 63 99-105 degrees C
Stop and go traffic in the heat of the day , max 105 on my E63
Clk runs closer 102 normal, maybe smaller cooler but have seen 107 sometimes
80 degrees is when the flashing stops and the fun begins.

Im usually in the range you stated during normal driving, but a few weeks ago while sitting in traffic in 105degree heat it was pushing 115c.. i was slowly going up hill... 5-10mph little stop and go for close to an hour and 45min.. not sure if that is normal or not. as soon as we started going to quickly came back down.

Yes that would be normal with the stop and go, low speed and up hill, if possible shift to neutral to allow the engine to unload a bit if sitting in traffic.
Have you ever noticed how hot the engine valve covers are after just normal driving, you cannot hold your hand on them for a split second. Hours after shut down the engine still retains a lot of heat. This is one of the reasons we run synthetic oil and lots of it (9 quarts)

One thing you should be aware of is that if you drive say at night where there is a lot of flying bugs, they tend to collect in the front cooler, passenger side cooler and the rad. These areas should be flushed "with normal water pressure with spray nozzle, do not use a high pressure washer as it will damage the fins" on a regular basis if you live in an area where the bugs are plenty, especially near water or swampy areas. Plugged air flow will result in higher operating temps for sure.

Serge718, if you have been doing some serious driving or stop and go in heavy traffic, not to worry. There is a fan that will also kick in to cool the engine oil, passenger side behind the bumper. Make sure the cooler is clear of bugs and such as this will reduce the efficiency of the cooler. You will notice the venting is different on the front bumper from driver side which is blocked to passenger side which is open. Of course you have the larger oil cooler directly behind the mesh at the lower section of the bumper.
When you say 100% anti freeze do you mean pure antifreeze with no additional added water, if so this is wrong. Pure antifreeze will actually freeze before the proper mixture of antifreeze and water will in the same application. 50/50 is good for top ups.

Serge, I do not want to mislead you and would recommend you get a second opinion from a tech or a licensed mechanic, talk is cheap. Purchase a antifreeze tester and check to see what you have as far as concentration. I believe those specialists will also agree with me as far as the water addition.
Now the oil temp, I notice you are in sport mode 5th gear 55 mph, revs unknown,
This means the trans starts in first gear and is a little more aggressive with the engine/trans rev/shifting. Drive the car in C and compare the temps I think you will see a difference, most I have seen is 107-108 on the wifes' CLK63 Cab the E63 never got that hot and for that I do not know why ha ha. Check the coolers for debris just in case it's dirty . There is a check to see if the cooler fan pass side is running as it will spin up when you start the car, get someone to start the car an listen pass/side front for fan spool up then shut down.
