Wife wants an SUV....

Ok, so the wife has been wanting a new GL550 for a while. I talked her into a new 2013 300 SRT-8 earlier this year and, well, she hates it! So as some of you know...if Momma ain't happy, nobodies happy! I'm ok with a GL long as a get to keep the E55 and my Lightning. She tells me we should just order a 2014 GL63! All I have to do is get rid of all three; the SRT, the E55 and the Lightning.

What do you guys think? Fair deal or no way?
p.s. I have another truck for a daily driver and don't really need the extra vehicles, but its kinda cool having them.

Yeah, I'd keep my cars and let her pick what she'd be happy with.

My wife has driven sporty trucks & SUVs for the past 13 years...'00 Roush F150 Stage1, Harley F150 Crewcab, Jeep SRT8. When it comes time to buying her next car in a year or so, she wanted to look at the new SRT Jeeps and I convinced her to look at the X5M as well. However, over the past few months both her mother and sister have purchased an Expedition with 3-row seating. Now she's all interested in that because she's convinced our 3 sons need more room than a 5-seater mid-size SUV can provide. You can't tell how thrilled I am at the prospect of a lumbering behemoth of an SUV.

Marc, what are the SUV requirements? We have a Cayenne Turbo S that is a lot of fun but swills gas like no other (12.5 mpg average - the GL63 would be right there too) and isn't hugely practical for our now-4 person family. The GL would be more practical but people that buy new Mercedes are nuts to eat that depreciation.

I'd go with the GL550 - that will probably be our replacement for the Cayenne (baby stuff takes up WAY too much space.) Sounds like that also lets you keep the E55 and the Lightning and a near-mint CPO 550 will be 1/2 the cost of the GL63. Makes more sense to me.

Why do you have to get rid of 3 cars for one? I say get rid of the srt and the lightning. Why do you need 2 trucks and a srt that one no will drive?

How much baby stuff do you tote around for a Cayenne not to be big enough for a 4-person family?

The Cayenne isn't that big inside. The cargo area is about the same dimensions as the trunk of the E55, and two different strollers we have won't go in front to back and one won't even fit side to side.

Those are just single kid strollers too - double kid strollers are even bigger. I hate strollers.

Also, rear-facing car seats are enormous. I'm only 6 feet and I have to move the driver's seat forward to the point where my knees are almost touching the dash in the Cayenne to not be making contact with the child seat behind me. The Cayenne may seem big (and weigh a lot) but its all the serious business 4WD system underneath and the curvy body taking up space you would otherwise use for passengers.

This is happing to me too!

So I went to my Audi dealer to talk about ordering an RS7 and my wife starts wanting to buy the A7 Prestige S SUV! I'm still trying to convince her that she does not need another SUV!

At the dealer looking at a low mileage 12 GL550 right now. She likes it and I get to keep the E and the Lightning (although I'm ready for it to find a new home). Sucks that the 12 GL doesn't have the twin turbo motor. Can't win them all, but I think this is a good compromise.

I'll be looking at a GL for my wife some time soon. We are going to opt for the diesel version though...

Diesel GL makes a lot of sense. There's even tunes for the first gen, not sure about the second gen (which already gets like 445 ft lbs tq.) We may find a nicely-kept one as our next car... The Turbo S is fun and quick but overkill for babyhaulin'.

Pulled the trigger today. 2012 Gl550, 26k miles, black on black and fully loaded! Nice ride, but I'll miss the SRT, it was pretty cool.

+1. The ne bi-turbo GL450 is still a good substitute. With an ECU tune, it's 500+ hp. Not to mention, the GL with wider wheels and tires handles suprisingly well for a 7 seat SUV.
