Reports are that the 7G transmission will not be in AMG's shipped to the USA.
Also, the difference in performance for an E60 vs E55 would be predicted to be negligible. The reason to keep upping the ante is to be able to claim better power data than the new M5 will be offering.

It's not that they set out to change the E55 so soon.
It's just a coinicidence that the new 211E55 happened to come out when it did.
The E55's engine isn't built just for the E55.....it's also used in the SL55, CL55 and S55 and the SL55 release was nearly a year before the E55's.
So when the engine changes, all the models get it, though the phase-in is staggered a bit.
