NEED NEW KEY?!
Gents,
I am in need of a spare key for the "Beast", I understand these keys are expensive from the dealership. I saw some newer keys (chrome and black) for sale on EBay for pretty cheap, but they need to be programmed I imagine. Anybody have some experience dealing with this? Where did you buy, cost, key to where for programming, etc?
Thanks!

I'm not sure how you'd be successful buying a key online.
When I got my replacement key (from MB) I had to provide them with my VIN number and proof of ownership before they'd order it. There is a mechanical key that needs to be cut to match your doors and trunk, and I'm not sure what sort of VIN coding is done for the electronic part of the key?
Ultimately, once you have a proper key you put it in the ignition and it will program itself to the car after a couple of hours.... the center display will describe what is happening.
A couple quick searches around here should fill in the other details I've forgotten....

GregMB is correct, dealer only, if someone claims to be able to code your E Bay bought key, do not ,,,,,. When purchased through the dealer you can be reassured that it is correct and will start your car as well as the mechanical key will work. It is a security issue as if any one went to get the fob programmed there would be a lot of missing Benzs out there.

It was around $250 - $280....
When I got my car it only had the second (plastic only) key, not the nice chrome trimmed one. It was important enough to me that I went and got a new one (and a set of "real" OEM floormats) the first week of ownership.
Those little details are important to me, and considering the kind of $$$ I've spent on other E55 related stuff, those were some of the cheapest things I've purchased.

once a key is programmed to a car it cannot be used with another. Im in a similar situation and was told by a MB tech this information. make a long story short dealer item only. the ebay keys are basically good for the case and thats it. the buttons you might be able to program to lock and unlock but the start/off feature of the key is where the issue lies.

I am missing the metal insert for the newer chrome key.I bought a few metal key fobs off eBay but they don't fit the chrome newer key base property. I took the poopy fitting metal key insert to a lock smith and he said he he could cut it for $40. So I wanted to know if there is a good vendor to get the blank metal insert. Or if there is a part number for the blank? I want the blank key to click/lock into the fob when it didn't, tried to manipulate it with dremal/drill but no luck getting it to lock in. Just trying to get the correct blank metal my insert when I bought the car it was missing in the nicer chrome key! Sorry for the rant
A new blade key will cost you less than that at the dealer.
