I just spent 30 mins digging my car out, too. To make matters worse, there was a layer of ice (from the freezing rain) at the bottom so I had to brush the snow off first and THEN scrape off all the ice.

I've officially had it with winter. This year has been the most brutal in almost 10 years, and we're only starting off January. WTF!

I've got my turbo car in there and a customer car. Bummed, but it's just a car at the end of the day. This one lived life in Arizona until March 2013, lol

Do you guys in the snow ever worry about cracking your blocks? Seems like it would be an issue.

cracking a block is an issue, why would it be any more prevalent in the snowier climates?

Water freezing inside the block doesn't do anything? This seems to be very common on boats not properly winterized.

Antifreeze serves its purpose by literal definition. Antifreeze is less effective than water in thermal transfer, it's only used to lubricate and prevent the water from freezing

That's because boats pull their cooling water directly from the water they float in, which has not been treated with antifreeze. So when the temps drop the plain water which has been pumped into the engine freezes, and can crack the block.

Car's have a sealed recirculating cooling system which when properly maintained with antifreeze, prevents the coolant from freezing, even in extreme temperatures.

Yes, understood (although we would still need to calculate the freezing temp with mixed antifreeze). My question is why is it so common for boats to have cracked blocks in the winter time and not our cars. Is it user error (starting when its frozen) or does it really get that cold that they just pop the block plugs? Let's not just keep the discussion to antifreeze, theres 4-5 other types of fluids in our cars that could potentially freeze and cause damage. but I have family in St Paul MN and its -17 over there so just a thought.

Btw what color? Looks like Tektite???

Probable cause for boat motors freezing would be the presence of water not removed totally from the block. "Frost" plugs are just ports to remove moulding sand from the block. To rely on the frost plugs being pushed out from a frozen block would be a wager you would not win often. Ice knows no direction and will push the block out wherever, most times in the valve lifter gallery where the walls are thin. For all you guys running water only in your cars and are now subject to freezing temps, either garage the car in a heated garage or get some anti freeze into the rad now. Windshield washer bottles are often ignored and have water in them, they freeze quite nicely also and usually take out the washer pump when frozen. Bigking we had -28C, no freeze issues.

The closest fluid to danger would be the water/coolant but I've never had an issue. Just got back from the gym, it's -2F here right now. It's plain old black

It's really not that big of a deal, it's just frozen water. MB does a very good job at sealing these cars, and really the biggest problem is the salt used... not necessarily the snow. She'll stay in the backyard and won't see the road until we get some rains to wash away the salt.

I've heard a lot about block plugs and nothing I hear seems to be the general "standard". Some have said a pushed plug = head gasket/cracked block and I've heard a few other arguments. Again, I totally forgot that boats are simply sucking in water under the hull and that they don't have a sealed system. Thanks guys! Learned something new today!

I feel your pain. This was my S600 a few years back when we had record snow in Chicago. It was parked outside while I put the 55 engine in the c43. I think we had around 18" of snow overnight.
Its currently -15 out.

This is the worst we've had in years actually. I'm more bummed that the car isn't in the garage getting worked on than I am about the snow
