Question E55 HP...why isn't it 496??

hey guys,

why do you think the E55 produces less HP than the S and CL?
and if it does produce less power have any of you figured out how
to make it equal?

What I heard was that the exhaust couldn't be made long enough for those extra ponies...

E55 AMG
IT IS THE SAME HP!

This topic has been discussed many times. Do a search and you will see that all real world evidence suggests that the E55's power is in fact the same as the S55, SL55, and CL55. It's believed that MB wants to justify the cost difference between their flagship S, SL, CL models and the E, and thus "markets" the E55 with a lower hp rating.

However, independant dyno tests, AMG's own internal dyno figures, 0-60, and 1/4 mile times all suggest that the E55's power is indeed on par with the rest of the 55K engined cars.

Some nice threads on this topic got wiped. Basically, Evosport dyno'ed a stock 2003 with 3k miles on it and got 424 rwhp. This is equivalent to about 510's crank HP. The car is underrated power-wise as a marketing scheme to protect sales of the V12 and 5.5l CL, S, and SL class.

That would be pretty weird considering the W211 E55 is over 10 inches longer with 11 inch longer wheelbase than an R230 SL55!

Possible, but it defies one's initial impression.

I think there are also posts discussing the air intake tubes and how the E55 tubes are "pinched" in areas restricting the intake, yet the same engine intakes in the S and CL are much more open and less restricted. Others are correct. The HP is reduced to justify the price of S and CL for same engine. Good marketing? Maybe so.....

493 HP confirmed!

I purchased my 04 E55 in PA and registered it in SC. I received an official ownership title document from Mercedes Benz (typically given to the dealer) that I had to surrender to the SC DOT to receive my SC title. The HP listed on the M-B document was 493!

This should be easily confirmed by other M-B dealers.

2016 GLE63s / 2016 E63s / 2002 E55
Have any of the W211 E55 owners checked the owners manual (OM)? All W210 E55's from 1999 thru 2002 are listed and advertised at 349HP and the 2001 S55 & CL55 listed as 354HP and the 2002 S55 & CL55 is listed as 355HP.

Take a look at my E55 OM:

when i had my S55 i also wondered why the difference.

it just seems strange

i don't think it's for them to protect anything when on their own site they list the e55's 0-60 as 4.6sec, faster than the others

You are looking at the difference between DIN and SAE Net:

DIN Horsepower
This is a standard, DIN 70020, for measuring horsepower that very closely matches SAE net. The conditions of the test vary slightly, but the required equipment on the engine and the point of measurement (flywheel) remains the same. Because the test conditions are so similar, it is safe to divide DIN horsepower by 1.0139 to arrive at SAE net. This value is so close to equal that for all but the most technical purposes DIN and SAE net are interchangeable.

355/1.0139=350

It also seems odd that the 2001 S55 & CL55 is advertised at 354HP and the 2002 S55 & CL55 is 355HP. What's up with the 1 HP difference? Seem stupid to even advertised this.
