I had a WRX and it was fun and cheap, but the interior was econo-car cheapo. I couldn't stand it and sold it. The performance was pretty good, but shifter wasn't that great, steering was kinda slow and it was too small for me, for a 4 door that is.
The STi should be even better but I noticed that they didn't change the cheapo interior at all. So it depends on your priorities.

STi IMHO wouldn't make a great commute car to work. The interior is not great, and it isn't one of the quietest cars around. On an open road, especially a dirt road, it is probably one of the finest machines out there. The perforamance numbers are amazing.

Love the car. I don't know if it would make a good commuter car, since he will probablly want to drive it hard eveyday!!!
Drove my friends at sears point, I could not believe my time. I was 8 seconds faster than when I drove my M3... 8 seconds!!! that's a etenity!!!!!
Now i really want to try the Evo8!!!

If your friend can wait till next spring, Saab is coming out with a rebodied WRX/STi and is calling it the 9-2. It is essentially a WRX with an a European interior and a somewhat better exterior.
