In 04 TCU into 05 e55 amg :)
Hello guys.
Due to help with some other people that posted on a previous thread of mine, (gregmb specifically), I ordered a TCU with the correct serial code that enables "Burn outs"
The TCU I got in is from an S55 amg, but has the same exact serial number for the 03-04 e55 amg"s.
I installed the TCU but car doesn't turn over. I'm thinking I need to get this coded to the ECU or something? Vin coding? Do i need the other computers underneath the carpet to make this work? IDK...
Any one with suggestion on where I might be able to take it in the Los Angeles area to get this up and running?
Thanks!!!!!

You'll have to take your car and S55 tcu to a dealership and have it scn coded from the MB server in Germany. I also purchased a used tcu for an s55 and had to do this. After scn coding it worked perfectly.

I would guess they shouldn't charge more than 1.5 hrs to do it at whatever their rate is, maybe $100-$200.
My part numbers, both original and replacement were 034 545 1032.
I bought the spare to send to Eurocharged for their TCU tune as well as programming it for my 2.82 SL55 differential. I just wanted to keep the original in case of any problems. So far it has worked great.

I'm a technician at the dealer so it did not cost me anything.

Am I going to have this issue as well? I bought a spare TCU from an E500 2003 to send into BIP for a tune, do I have to get this scn coding done as well? Can I tell simply by installing it and if it doesn't start I need to get it done?
Last question, after this do you need to get your ECU reflashed again by EC because the scn programming sets it back to stock?
Regards

Lucky you greasemonkey.. Okay I'll have to find a dealership locally that wont rape me on my price. Also will it matter that this comes from an s55, or not? Since its techincally shared by the same engine and transmission and shares the same exact part number?

First problem I see for you is the AMG TCU's are specific to AMG's for faster shifting, paddle shifters, and who knows what else and the E500 carries a different part number. Whether the tuners can update a non-amg TCU to AMG specs I do not know.
If your car will not start with whatever TCU you have, provided it is the correct part number it will have to be SCN coded. Again, not sure if the tuners can do the SCN for you either. I suspect, any AMG 211 TCU will swap into another AMG 211, but when changing chassis, from a 230 (SL) 220(S) you will have to SCN code it for sure.
MB does not give us any information about the factory software flashes, or SCN coding, whether it a TCU, ECU or whatever. The Germans aren't real big on sharing this information nor do they want or like their cars being modded, so we are pretty much kept in the dark about these things.
Here is a picture of my S55 TCU. The same part number as my E55 TCU and they are indistinguishable other than the serial number and Q number.

Something doesn't make sense here....
When I wanted to do a TCU tune on my 2006 E55, Eurocharged sent me a "loaner" TCU so that I could still drive my car while they programmed my original one. The one they sent me was out of a 2004 (different part number than mine, I have the label image somewhere around here) and the car worked fine with it.
I don't recall them needing to know anything special about my car (like the VIN #) before sending my that loaner... It seemed at the time like they just sent that loaner out to whomever needed it with no special VIN coding required.
At the very least, it is obvious to me that Jerry at Eurocharged has the capability to do the proper coding for any AMG TCU that you'd want to use.... It might make sense to reach out to him before you go begging for help at the dealer.

Greg, it seems you have confirmed that a 211 tcu can be swapped between any other 211, however the op's original question was concerning a 220 tcu which cannot be directly swapped. Either the dealer, or EC, if they are able, will have to code the tcu. A tcu "tune" is a separate issue, and if the OP isn't looking for that, then the dealer cost vs. tcu tune cost is several hundred dollars apart. Also to be clear, the coding I am talking about is not VIN specific per se, it's model specific.

I had a similar pursuit, problem, and resolution - but unfortunately, you may end up being disappointed in the end anyway.
I previously had the theory that the TCU itself was responsible for allowing burnouts, and while it still may play a factor, going to an '03 TCU didn't allow me to do burnouts in my '05, even with a TCU tune from Eurocharged.
I also had your no-start condition issue, so sending the TCU to Eurocharged for their tune DID allow it to function as the TCU for the car, but it did NOT enable burnouts. I thought it did at first, but was wrong - the car still pulls timing all day once it detects wheel spin with traction control off.
My local mechanic is convinced the drive logic is housed in the traction control management unit under the hood, so we're going to pursue modifying that next.

Yes, it certainly seems like extra risk to buy a "non E55" TCU for this swap..... I keep thinking back to Adianaty's experience of simply swapping TCUs (older for newer) and the results were flawless. He didn't do anything "extra" as far as I recall..... No special programming, no ESP module swaps under the hood, etc.
One way or the other we will figure this out. I just bought a 2003 E55 TCU module off eBay this morning..... So I've got skin in the game now too.

Sorry I can't be of help with the burnout issue, as my '04 has always worked, however I have not tried it with my new tcu tune on the ex-S55 tcu yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the ESP control module is the issue, as that is the controller of wheelspin.

Ebay. Was watching for about 2 months, seller took my best offer for $115 shipped. Theres not a big demand for these and some sit on ebay for many months due to stubborn sellers.

Wow, hope this isn't the case for me. If I cant get this resolved Im just going to part ways with the car at some point.
Do you know what the part number you got from the 03 tcu?

I sent my 06 tcu to be flashed and borrowed my friends tcu from his 04 with a flash already on it...
Car runs just the shifts are wacky and when hit minus on the tiptronic it puts me in a higher gear than I'm supposed to be in.....

If anyone is wiling to loan me a 2004 tcu, I'll try it out and investigate further. Mine is '05 ...it'd be an interesting experiment. Willing to provide deposit. Just hit me up. I don't do burnouts but always interested in this type of stuff

I'd go deeper than just plugging it in and driving. I would compare all the settings in DAS developer mode to see if they are the same or different. It also sounds like people have had mixed results. Some say it doesn't work, some say it does.
