Altenator failed (melted)

Does anybody know what areas of the circuit i should check over while its away? (so i dont damage the replacement alt...) The alternator specialist told me to check the main power lug off the alternator for heat damage which looks fine.... anybody got anything else or actual tests to run while its away?
It had melted what i believe to be the rectifier pack that is incased in plastic to the opposite side of the voltage regulator.
The symptom was the normal red battery message and visit workshop which i assumed to be the voltage reg but once i got the alt off it was clear it was a much bigger issue than that.

So if he cant repair it i will prob go with the rockauto ones at 350 odd.
Where are these 250usd ones? I need a place that ships overseas so amazon and the like is no good to me.
