Wavetrac issues?
Thinking about buying a wavetrac. I heard some of the BMW guys where having clunking or whining types noises on some cars. I think most of them are manual.
Wanted to hear if anyone has had problems with them on our cars.

I have a Quaife in and checked the backlash and I didn't need any shims or anything and I'm not having any issues but I've heard that the Quaife drop directly in...... put the ring gear/ bearings in boiling water so it would expand and put the LSD in the freezer overnight and it worked out great...good luck.... More members need to look at the DIY section of this forum but I'll help you out here's a DIY on LSDhttps://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...e-install.html

How does the Quaife compare to the Wavetrac? It seems to me the Quaife diff is a lot more common among W211 AMG owners but I could be wrong, seeing as how I don't own one lol

This place is a joke.
Running a wavetrac with no issues. No noise, no whine, and did not need to adjust backlash. I reused the original carrier bearings since that is how the diff was setup from the factory. An important note!! The snap rings that hold the carrier bearings in the diff housing, are different thicknesses, this is how the factory shims the gear. Make SURE these do not get mixed up from left to right!!
I do get clunky shifts into drive, and at slower speeds but I think that is my TCU tune with the torque limiters modified.

I'm running Quaiffe in my 03 SL ,no issues at all, if you do this job make sure you have LARGE snap ring pliers .

also make sure that you leave the weep hole open for lubrication when you put the snap ring back in.... but you should follow DIY and don't get the left and right mix up one side a little thicker than the other

I know it is not the same car, but i have had a Wavetrac in my Evo with no issues.
To AMG...the Wavetrac is supposed to be better than the Quaiffe as far as everything i read when i chose what to use in my car. I had heard that the guy who came up with the Wavetrac units used to work for Quaiffe.
Either way i don't think you can go wrong with either.

I got my Wavetrac unit from Craig @ BI and so far have zero complaints.. I haven't put that many miles on it but they have been HARD miles, mostly track miles I know plenty of people using the Quiafe but don't think you can go wrong with either..

Ah for sure, found this post if it matters at all:
They are both good units. The Autotech use to be the U.S. wholesale distributor for Quaife, take that as you will. The main difference is that the wavetrac under zero load conditions still locks. Where the Quaife does not. The real benefit of the wavetrac is if you lift a wheel off the ground it will still put power through the other wheel where the Quaife will go open like there is no lsd. This however is not normally a problem. Also all Quaife units are warrentied through the dealer network in the U.S. So no worries there.
The OS Giken is pretty awesome but $$$$. Unless you are tracking a lot I can not see the justification. I have and have put in many Quaife units and have nothing bad to say about it. You can feel the momentary transitions between unload and load when driving hard through the turns but once you get use to it, it does not seem weird. Under normal driving it is as it was not even there.

I was wondering how much did you pay for install labor? I am waiting to hear back from a local performance shop with a quote for labor if I buy the WaveTrac LSD myself but they also mentioned I'll be needing to buy quite a few other parts needed to do the job. But I've also read on this form that people paid around $800-$900 USD to do this kind of job, I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Given how much work it is to do this swap (or the Quaife), I want to say it may cost you more than that.
I built a seperate diff on the side and spent about a day swapping complete housings (not hard, but stubborn as most of the parts most likely have never been removed).
Quaife diff, complete E63 rear diff housing (I wanted the bigger gearing), New diff and axle seals, new bearings.
Total in all parts alone was about $1700 doing what I did.

I was quoted around $1500 labor (by two different shops) to install the Wavetrac that I had already purchased. That was too much for my budget, so I did the install myself. Here's a thread I started with some of the details: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...lsd-setup.html
It turned out to be quite a big job to get the diff out of the car and then properly setup the the preload and backlash. I can see why the labor was quoted so high, but I'm still glad I did it myself.
