Yeah, I'm going to stay away from it. The SC pulley seems like a much better idea for what I'm looking for right now.

This is the first I've heard of needing to upgrade clutch packs?

Doesn't the crank pulley actually consist of 2 pulleys bolted or pressed and pinned together? The one closer to the engine drives all the accessories, and the second one only drives the S/C? There for no need to worry about overdriving your other accessories?

They can go out sooner then that, most have and sadly many don't even know. Mine went out before 50k miles.

You should get the CM30 pump you will thank yourself.

FYI Headers should be your first power mod on a 55k. The stock ones are awful. You will gain a lot of power and sound. Not to mention your engine will run substantially cooler.

Adding a pulley on an otherwise stock e55 is just begging for more heat soak.

My recommended order of mods : (1) headers, (2) s/c pulley (~ 1 -2 psi more boost), (3) cooler plugs, and (4) split cooling with a large tank (3+ gallon reservoir) if you really are going to do repeated runs...

The '010' Bosch pump has been shown to be a better pump than the Johnson CM30, but either way this is just basic maintenance....

Thank you for the advice. I've hesitated on the headers because the cars still under warranty. If something goes wrong it won't be hard to throw the stock pulley on and get it fixed without question. That being said it's just another bolt on and I would LOVE to see the gains

My other concern is I'm in Cali and dealing with smog is a pain in the *** out here. Don't think headers will fly

If you do a bit of searching you will find some of the biggest gains can be had from just the headers (the stock manifolds are awful) ~ 40whp across the power band. I too am in Cali (South OC) and no issues with smog. I also think headers are a bit "safer" than other mods, as they help the engine breath better, and should reduce EGTs. If you keep your stock manifolds and increase boost, you are just asking for trouble IMHO.

That's good news. I noticed you went with benzworks headers. I plan on them doing my work and tune also. Heard good things about those guys

The problem with headers is that almost none of them are true bolt-on. Most require the deletion of your primary cats. I think PLM may be the only ones that don't?

I am little suprised about no one doing the clutch pack upgrade. Serge from benzworks did it for me back in day when he worked for MB. I have the 2007 SL55 clutch pack on my 2004 which was bad.

But what does this do? You don't exactly hear about a lot of people having s/c clutch problems.

It is not a performance mod (just maintenance)....IIRC late '05 MB redesigned the clutch - supposedly to engage better. I have an '06 so already had the new design, but I have replaced the clutch as they wear out. There is definitely a proper way to setup the clutch too and many older cars need to have the clutch adjusted (or replaced).

Also, I have found the belt wrap kit is a nice add-on too (in terms of engagement and preventing slippage)...

It's a fairly common problem. Some just hear a chirp when the supercharger clutch engages others have a major jerk when it engages. Mine is smooth and locked in FTW

What does it cost for a new one and does it cause big damage if it goes?

Nothing to worry about....when your car is at Benzworks they'll be able to tell you the condition...

IIRC the clutch is part of the upper SC pulley.
So if you get a smaller SC pulley, there is new clutch material baked to the back of it.

I'm getting that awful chirp every time the S/C clutch engages. Can feel a definite jerk when the pulley slips and it's getting worse. I'm due for a service E, but I haven't found the list of items that come with a service E on my 04 E55.

I am waiting for the right time to get the belt wrap kit from Shardul and it seems that the time is getting very close to pull the trigger.

Be sure to get the aluminum idler pulleys from him, too. When that stock plastic(!!!) one goes, it can get nasty. Mine went out and shredded both belts.

The chirp is likely an indication you clutch pack needs to be replaced.
