E55 speedo problem

Hey all,

Wasn't sure which sub-forum to start this thread in.

I got a 2004 E55 a few weeks ago. Last weekend I took it on a road trip and found the digital speed readout. I noticed that the needle was reading different to the digital read out. I checked against my Garmin satnav which confirmed that the digital readout was correct and the analogue needle was reading slow...when the needle says 22mph the digital and satnav show 30mph, at 60mph on the the needle, digital and satnav say about 80mph.

Anyone got any ideas why the needle would be reading slow?

Many thanks,
T K

255 35 19 tyres (fitted when I got it so not sure what stock is). But I'd assume the digital and analogue readouts would take the measurement from the same place, or am I wrong?

It's a possiblity that they don't, but that would have to be a horribly sized tire for the difference of 20mph @ 60.

Is the 255/35 the rear tire?

Tire size would effect both digital and analog read outs not just the analog needle.

Enigma, That's what I thought.

HeissRod, that's the front and rear. They are CL65 rims I believe.

My guess would be an issue with the analog display. Something back there is causing it to misread the output from the computer/VSS. You may have to take your cluster out and take it to a shop or the whole car in to have them figure out what's going on.

It looks that way. Thought I'd check here first in case anyone has already had the issue.

Just an FYI, since you were unsure, the stock sizes are:
245/40_18 F
265/35_18 R

Here is someone who had a similar problem, but with the digital and analog discrepancies reversed. (Analog reading higher)

Thanks HeissRod,
The km/h to mph ratio is out for that to be the problem on mine.
I'll pop down to the dealer and see what they say!
