Not sure what happened in the OP's case, but I lost a transmission like this:
Trans oil pump bearing failed > Trans Oil pump burned out > Trans failed > took torque converter with it.
I had an indy tell me this was a common problem. This guy was also the service manager at my MB dealer for many years.
I only had the car for a week back then and I didn't know the signs. The trans started whining loudly, but I thought it was coming from the blower. Finally, it let go in a puff of white smoke.

Wish I knew! Car has 102k and I had just gone on a 2 hour drive and it just stopped going after getting to a stoplight. Not abused and 99% daily driven just getting to work and dropping my kids off. Dealer changed fluid at 60K then I changed it at 92K. When I changed it everything looked pretty clean... I just don't know....

I can't tell you what the previous dealer change did but I put factory fluid from the dealer along with filter/gasket. Im really at a loss here. Bagmans theory might be the same cause here.. there is a lot of metal.

This place is a joke.
It's very unusual for sure. Try car-part.com. Anywhere from $800-$2500 used. Expect about $1000 to install, maybe a bit less.

Transmissions let go for all sorts of reasons. Pumps fail. Seals fail. Bearings fail. It is not terribly common but it does happen. It is just not like some manufacturers that you can count on needing a rebuild at 100k. Most Mercedes do not. If there are not large chunks of debris it probably can be rebuilt but check the dealer on a reman unit. The cost on these has gotten really reasonable and you can go used fairly safely. Also if you want something a little beefier go with Southern Hot Rod. Good guys and build a few different level transmissions.

If clutches fail (slipping) rebuilding is reasonable but if any hard parts fail ( pump, planetary, etc) it is usually cheaper finding another trans. My first guess is that a pump failed but by looking at how much steel is in your pan, start looking for a good used one or a rebuilt one. I doubt it would be cost effective to rebuild yours. As stated try car-part.com. I have a bill shurr trans in my s600 after smoking the stock clutches and the 65 clutches I put in it. Been good for 5 years so far must be too much torque

When mine blew, I bought a reman for $2,500 from a Private MB shop in Pompano. Got my 1.49 60ft. on it too. I'll see if I still have their number if you want one. They always have a couple ready to go. 3 of their techs drive E55s.
