E63 Rough Idle

I am new to high performance cars like the AMG as I have only ever driven 4 cylinder jap cars up to now, so excuse my ignorance.

1-Just bought a used 2007 E63 about month ago with 57K and excellent maintenance record. Over past two weeks, my car has been vibrating slightly, almost in waves after I start it up cold. This subsides after 5-10 minutes of driving.

2-Also on cold start up, my transmission revs at about 1500 for minute, then backs off to about 700. The warmer the engine, the shorter this lasts or it doesnt happen at all. Is this normal?

I do have that tapping noise for about a minute on a cold start also, which I realize is from the bleeddown of oil from the buckets. Otherwise I never hear it.

There is no smoke or sweet smelling exhuast and I have checked the coolant by dipping it in paper and dont see any oil.

My mercedes report said that the engine and transmission mounts were replaced at 52k but I dont see anything about new cams/lifters/buckets or head bolts. Air filters were replaced at the right mileage...I forget exaclty when. I took it to an MB deal after buying it and after an hour they said all was good and I check the oil and coolant regularly and fill it with 93 octane. Car seems to run great otherwise (I only ever driven a e55 once...a long time ago so thats all I have to compare to), so is there something I should worried about?

I have done all the reading about headbolts and cam issues, so I am aware of these possible issues down the road.

Thanks

spark plugs could be original.

Check history for spark plugs and transmission service. Not sure if it has any relation to your issues but pretty important. I bought my E55 used and was shocked to see the completely wrong spark plugs had been installed. When side by side with correct ones the threaded portion was like 1/2 as long as the correct one and basically concealed the spark plug electrode. Gruesome. Ran great though, go figure!

RPMs climbing to 1500 then dropping to 700 a minute later on cold start is normal. I also get the tick sound on cold starts for a few minutes but only if the car has been sitting for a few days.

Did MB get a chance to cold start it and see what may be going on with he rough idle?

Hey, were you able to sort your vibration problems out? I have 2007 E63 with 50K miles on it that I bought 3 months ago. The car has some vibrations when at street light, starting the engine on or off. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes. I replaced the engine and tranny mounts 2 weeks ago with OEM parts. The car was very smooth, and I thought mounts were the culprit. But now the vibrations are back. Does anybody have any suggestions what else could be?

Small vibrations. Nothing in my car has been replaced besides regular maintenance. Not sure if it is time to change spark plugs or not?

My E63 sits quite a bit and I usually drive it maybe once a week. I used to have issues with it ticking but that has totally gone away after putting some Ceratec in the oil. The stuff works and I'll be using it at every oil change. It's been discussed on here on the forums quite a bit.

Some of the injector pics from the C63 (M156) injector replacement thread has me thinking our cars could use fuel cleaner ran through them. I ran a cup full of seafoam in the tank a couple of weeks ago, seems to have gotten rid of my vibrations. When I pulled the rails off to do my intake gasket they looked dirty, and had deposits on the ends on a few injectors. I'm not certain why but our cars also loose intake gaskets, so I replaced mine and notice a gain in power after 4k rpm, although the headers and headbolts were done at the same time. I already had it tuned before and never remember the boost of power at any rpm before I did the work. Dirty injectors, intake leak, or maybe the tune/headers did the trick? I did yank the plugs out when doing my headbolts and found oil deposits on them because of the massive amounts of oil that ends up going back into the intake. I installed a catch can but didnt like the way it came out so I'm back to stock on that part. Hard for me to spend $600 on a can system right now. Anyhow; good luck.

I had similar issue with my 2007. Had a shop replace engine & trans mounts but slight rumble reminded.
I then changed intake manifold gasket, PCV valve, installed oil/air separator (must item IMO, good change your intake is already coated with sludge of oil), it got a whole lot smoother.
I then changed the oil to Motul 8100 5w40 with ceratec and it purrs as nicely as any good big 6.2 V8 could.
If you have access to scanner, you might want to check your LTFT, mine seems to run the best when it got down to about 10 or less (check your both intakebox, it may have very small gap that lets through unmetered air).
Good luck!

I changed to Motul 5-40 Excess too and it does feel smoother. As far as the unmetered air goes, wouldn't that cause an error in the dash?

I used Ceratec 4000 miles ago and really liked it. The engine became smoother. But can you really put it as often? I think it said on the bottle that it lasts for 30K miles. Not sure if using too much can harm or not.

I don't remember. I want to say I read something about using it every oil change. I very well could be wrong though. It doesn't seem like it would really harm anything by using it each oil change.

I recently changed from Mobil 1 to Liquid Moly 5W/40 and also put in a can of Ceretac. Love the results so far - quieter and smoother running engine. I plan on adding Ceretac at every other oil change (usually go around 8k miles). I think anything more would be overkill, especially since the instructions say every 30k miles.

If you have extreme vibrations with idling or on acceleration, it could be engine mounts or transmission mounts, or even a bad flex coupler.
