Here's the latest on these cheaper AMG's which now have a name:
"AMG SPORTS"
Mercedes Goes Cheaper with AMG Sport Line
The article explains that AMG aims to more than double their total sales in the next 3 years with the help of these new 'Sport' models saying they are
"a convincing proposition for our customers: genuine sports car technology becomes accessible, appealing to an even broader-ranging clientele worldwide.”
They are scheduled to make their debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show in January.
This picture shows a comparison of the 2 different C Class AMG Front Ends. To my eyes they both look good - yeah the more expensive 63 model looks slightly more aggressive and classy but really they are pretty damn similar:

I dislike that it's a numbers game these days where the most models with the most variants wins the market share and this is certainly the aim with the new AMG lineage. Mercedes now has an incredible amount of individual models available; currently around 225 with variants and growing.
I can see one of two scenarios occurring; either the S Class as the pinnacle of Mercedes engineering and prestige will now be filtered down in the hierarchy as a result of Maybach moving under the 3 pointed star umbrella. Current S Class owners have a right to feel disgruntled if this transpires. However if handled carefully I can see this move actually strengthening the S Class line and Maybach brand as the chassis with both long and short wheel base versions encompasses a broader section of the market and extends the range consequently directly competing with the likes of Bentley and Rolls Royce as well as the (comparatively) less expensive competition such as BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 where the current S Class resides.

Mercedes is a "for profit" company and have to answer to share holders. It is in their interest to offer competing models when their competition expands models and sub-models. You AMG guys might feel like you're getting the shaft for some reason because you were trying to buy some exclusivity, but there is no need to feel threatened. You still have some of the fastest sedans available.
The worst part of buying a new Benz is the rapid depreciation. Buying them with low miles a few years old makes great financial sense, but by then the new lower models might actually perform better.
At least Mercedes hasn't gone the way of Lexus with their "F-sport" line, where they charge a large premium for a body package and slightly firmer shocks, with absolutely no gain in HP or performance over the standard models.
