What is the overall opinion on aftermarket air filters?

I have used aftermarket filters in all my previous vehicles with success. Lately I use AFE dry filters and like being able to pop them out wash and install as often as I want. I have not used oiled filters in many years however.

What are your opinions on something like AFE dry filters in the E55?

Also, can someone school me on the function of the charcoal filter and how necessary it is.

Thank you!

I like my K&Ns just fine - @ ~$40/ea they seem to be doing well...

I only just replaced the under bonnet charcoal filter in addition to the 2 cartridge type filters under the glovebox as part of a regular maintenance routine. Some YouTube vids state that they are supposed to be changed every couple of years yet it's one of those maintenance items that can be neglected by many drivers. Prior to changing mine there was often a dank musty smell which thankfully has now disappeared. In addition just knowing the quality of the interior air is a whole lot healthier is reassuring. Having said that I would like to know more about their function and why there are 3 in total?

I had been tempted to drop some k&n's in for a while but been talked out of it - by myself the second time! Did a little research and sure enough the oem filter isn't a bottleneck at all. To my reasoning hi-flow filters would only be allowing larger particles - hence more contaminants through? The throttle body is the first place to clear her throat so the beast can breathe easy. A little more expensive than a couple of filters but I guess you get what you pay for...

I wonder how many members here actually know what this buttons function is? (I know I didn't - or couldn't recall lol)

> Button 9: Activated charcoal filter

K&N's are great - no worries and mine came with cleaning/oiling kit.
Zero performance increase, but cheaper when servicing and easy to clean.
