Group Buy for Performance Brake Pads W211 E55

I'm trying to organize a group buy for Carbotech Ceramic/Metallic brake pads and need at least 4 more people to commit in order for Carbotech to reproduce backing plates identical to the staock plates. Carbotech pads are rotor friendly and they offer a performance street pad all the way to a full bore race compound which are commonly used in SCCA racing events. The cost of a set of 8 pads for the front will be around $250; Mercedes charges over $300 for a set of front pads which cannot hold a candle to these. It will take about 1 month from order date to delivery. Rear pads will be available in the future if we are happy with the performance of the fronts. Check out their website Carbotech I'm interested in the Panther plus XP1108 pad for my car but unless you are tracking your car, then Panther Plus 1104 or 1106 are the way to go.

Carbotech Ceramic/Metallic brake pads
How do these compare with the Porterfield R4-S pads?

According to Carbotech, their pad is vastly superior to the R4-S. The R4-S may not even be enough for track use as it is primarily a performance street pad and the E55 is very heavy. The panther plus pad is probably what you're after for track use/street use and performance driving.

Is it just an urban legend that you cannot change the pads yourself?

I would join in but I would only like pads that don't dust, I don't plan on tracking the E55, but would do it just to get rid of the damn dust.

Ditto with eclou, is it an urban legend?

Best bet would be MB to do the work since the SBC has to be deactivated and then reactivated afterward. It seems rather complex according to the MB e-learning website.

The only reason I need you guys to preorder is for Carbotech to manufacture factory equivalent backing plates. You can choose the compound you want for the pads. Ceramic dusts less than stock and is rotor friendly, but if not tracking the car, then choose a performance street pad. C'mon Norb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll call Carbotech tomorrow and post how much it will cost exactly. Then anyone interested can paypal me the money and email me which compound they want.

Received a fax from Carbotech with actual prices.

Front (8 pads)

Bobcat (street) $302
1109 (race) $330

Rear (4 pads)

Bobcat $110
1109 $118

Only hitch is that there is no capacity to mount brake wear sensors. Sometime over the next week I will disconnect a wear sensor to see if there is a readout on the dash warning about the brakes needing attention. If so, I think our plans are out the window.

At this time, private Group Buys are not permitted on the forums as they compete directly with our PAYING advertisers who help support this site. If you wish to coordinate a Group Buy (and I'm all for saving money), I suggest you try to coordinate one with the several shops/dealers that sponsor this forum. I'm certain they would be happy to gain your business.

Should anyone have questions or input, please email Simon directly at webmaster@mbworld.org.
