Low Dust Ceramic Pad For The W211 E55

Guys, I will be placing an order soon for replacement pads for our W211 E55's. For all who want a rotor friendly low dust pad, I recommend this by Carbotech:

Carbotech Bobcat (1521) :
For 2003, Carbotech introduces Bobcat (1521), the much anticipated replacement for our heralded Super Street F. Like our Panther line of compounds, Bobcat is a ceramic based friction material offering practically zero rotor damage. Bobcat offers outstanding performance when cold, very low dusting, and low noise with an excellent initial bite. Friction coefficient is .5-.55 over it’s operating range of ambient temp to 900F. Bobcat is suitable for street, SCCA Solo 2 and Prosolo applications.

These pads will cost less than stock pads but will require prepayment and will take about one month from order date to delivery.

Norb, this is what you need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eclou too!!!

A lot of guys run these on their scoots in the cycle world too.... They are excellent pads with longer life also. The only draw back is they tend to be a little harder on your rotors, but a good trade off for the extra performance you'll get from them.... Let us know how they perform on your ride....

Received a fax from Carbotech with actual prices.

Front (8 pads)

Bobcat (street) $302
1109 (race) $330

Rear (4 pads)

Bobcat $110
1109 $118

Only hitch is that there is no capacity to mount brake wear sensors. Sometime over the next week I will disconnect a wear sensor to see if there is a readout on the dash warning about the brakes needing attention. If so, I think our plans are out the window.

DAMN MERCEDES AND ALL THEIR TECHNOLOGY ANYWAY!!!!
Takes all the fun out of doing some quick mods. How do mercedes sensors differ from the usual I see... You know the little metal tabs that scream at you when the pads are gone and their touching your rotors

In almost all systems when you disconnect the sensors there is no warning anymore. Should be a non-issue. Are we still certain the pads must be replaced by the factory? I cannot understand why that would be.

Since the other thread was closed. This really isn't a "Group Buy" because we're not saving money buy doing this. This is a Minimum Buy for Dr. Chill as the company he's trying to get to make the pads won't commit the expensive tooling unless he has a minimum order. Just to clear things up. We always try to throw business to our board sponsors.

Norb, you're not suggsting this is all for me since I've spent several hours on the phone, at MB dealer parts counter, sending out diagrams and researching pad compounds-all which will result in no profit to me and benefit all equally. I just felt there was an unmet need and no parts dealer, pad manufacturer, or forum sponser I contacted was interested.

Chill out! I think Norb was suggesting that what was ocurring was other than a group buy and therefor did not infringe board rules. From what I read, he was only trying to assist your cause.

I suspect you're right, but my first read of his post came after awiner's post closed my other thread and pissed me off since everyone I contacted was not interested in helping me on this endeavor. I know Norb's a good guy.

What? Did you edit your post? I was defending you. I felt that the moderator just read the last post on the thread and closed it without really knowing what was going on. We all know you weren't doing any "group buys". It was more like a courtesy buy for the rest of us.

I will be removing a wear sensor this weekend and confirming that the warning light does not go on. I will then post the result. I assume few people would want aftermarket pads without sensors if the warning light was on all the time. I just have to pull the trigger and place the order. Charles from Hong Kong said on another forum he was just informed Pagid has a pad for the car but 1 month ago when I contacted them they denied that they did. I'm awaiting Pagid's reply to my new inquiry tonight.

Just got an email from Pagid stating that they make a brake pad for our cars (W211 E55 that is). The fronts are model T5147NA and are street performance. They also make a race pad but it was unclear what model it is. Also unclear at present is whether or not a rear pad is available. Looks like we may not need carbotech at the moment but we'll know more in a few days.

Cool, I had Pagid on my 911 Turbo and they were awesome. No hesitation recommending them.

Well, I installed my new wheels and disconected a wear sensor on my front pads. After starting the engine and putting it in gear, there were no warning lights that came on (as expected). I hope we are close to getting a pad. Charles from Hong Kong is certain Pagid makes a race pad. Pagid USA says they have an OE pad. Here's a copy of the email I was sent yesterday from PagidUSA.

Dear Bill,

I checked with HQ in Germany and was told that Pagid makes the Street OE pad.
We also have made race pads which had been sold exclusively to AMG.

I am waiting for information which compound that was and whether they would sell it directly.

As soon as I know more I will let you know.

Kind regards
Andreas

I will post some pics of the car with the 19" HRE 547R's when I have a chance to clean up the car this weekend.

Latest reply from Pagid:

Dear Bill,

We have also more and more demand for this application in Europe and the good news are that we will make a race pad and a high performance pad.
We are testing at the moment with AMG different compounds.
The bad news are that according to HQ in Germany it will unfortunately take at least another 3 month until those pads will be available.
Anyway I will keep you posted.
I still do not know what pad your English friend meant. Obviously the Pagid street pad because we haven't made a race pad yet.

Kind regards

With all sincerity, thank you for taking the time to do this, I am very interested and you can count me in.
1. please let us know about disconnecting the wear sensor
2. Do ceramic pads squeal more than the OEM’s?

Thanks!

I'm out of the brake business now. Ceramics do not stop better then metallic, but are much cleaner and should not squeel. I use Porterfield race pads which are very noisy and dirty. Charles uses Pagid I believe and he recently emailed me to tell me he liked them. His username on AMG club forum is "hkoh" and he can tell you more. He's a nice idiot like me who races their E55, but in Hong Kong. The wear sensors only cause an error message if the 2 contact points actually make contact, not if they are removed. I have never received any error from the brakes with my sensors attached but wound up and tied together.
