Need to swap the engine. Thinking about doing it myself. What's everyone's experience with that kind of project? What to look out for and what to remember. Every bit of information is appreciated. Wasn't able to find a complete DIY here, so maybe with everyone's help I will make a good DIY with lots of pictures. Hoping to get lots of response.
Have never taken on a project this big. Would not say I am a mechanic by any means, but can figure most of it out and own most tools a guy needs. Just worried that there are things that I'm not aware of and I won't be able to do on my own. Like special tools or processes that require skills, settings something up a proper way. I believe plug and play can be figured out with appropriate amount of care and attention. Just not sure if plug and play is all there is to it. Yes I am doing direct swap. I have cls55 and will be putting cls55 or e55 engine in. E class is identical as chassis are the same.
That's one of those deals where if you need a DIY, you probably shouldn't be messing with it. Find a friend with more experience that will help you(or let you help him/her) or find a qualified independent mechanic shop to take care of it.
I'm guessing your crusade for a free engine from the MB dealer didn't work out?
I might try to do an entire E55 engine/transmision/drivetrain/etc. swap to a regular w211. I was told to talk with Shardul first and if all sounds ok I will go further.

From what I know and what @need4spd said, there shouldn't be any difference, but it is better to ask.
The reason why I ask is that I had found a complete E55 that is written off and transplanting it on an E200 is quite tempting.
I concur in finding a qualified mechanic to do the job.
It will cost a bit, but in the end you will have someone accountable if any post install issues arrive.
There is nothing a mechanic hates more than someone towing in there backyard handy work to have them diagnose what went wrong. That usually ends up costing as much as the install would.
Do research and shop around for quotes in writing.
Also the engine has scrap value, so see if you can negotiate that off the bill.

No luck with the dealer, I am still convinced they caused or at least added to the failure. But to prove it I'd have to spend same amount of money that I need to just fix her up, at least.
Yes I am hoping to get a friend to help me or at least guide me he's a professional that I trust.
Even the dealer here will not give me any warranty (unless they use their parts) and any other mechanic around here has never seen a car like that. So I'm afraid doing it myself is my safest bet, sounds crazy. But at least I care and won't be in a hurry. So I am still in need of any input from people who have done similar jobs and maybe have c0.02 to add.
