Rear end drops overnight

I have searched and read many threads on this issue but wanted a current opinion. I have noticed when it gets cold the rear end does not hold air overnight. I don't seem to have the problem when the temps are above freezing. Both sides drop evenly and lift immediately upon starting the car.

What is the consensus on the most common reason why this happens?

Pretty common; I'm assuming that it drops to where you can still at least get a finger in the gap, and then comes back up to two fingers on startup. If it's more (i.e. covering the top of the side tire tread) get it looked at soon- one of both of your bags is failing.

Dropping evenly generally means you have a slight leak in the air feed system in back. If you want a definitive answer, go to an Indy and have them do a soap-spray test on all of your fittings. Mine drops 1/4" when it gets really cold, but only after the car hasn't been driven for a couple of days. The dealer assured me () that this is within specs and pretty normal for a 12 y/o air bagged car.

it will be very hard to find a small leak via the soap-spray test.

Great point- Mine is a consistent dropper, but passed the stealer tests (including the 72 hour check)- The SA insisted that a bit is normal.

Shardul- Do you think having the car in ASII keeps the height better, or worse based on the increased bag pressure?

Looks like this in one day when it is cold, if it is warmer it stays up all week.

My 06 only has forty+ thousand miles and the rears also dropped noticeably in cold weather after a 2 days. New Arnotts solved the problem.

Ditto on the left rear of my car this past week. Above freezing, the rear stays up for two weeks. The past three mornings temps are approximately 7 degrees F and the left rear is collapsed. Raises right up upon starting the engine.

No answers on my other post ref installing Arnotts when installing the camber/toe kit but it looks like that will be my course of action....

My entire car drops over night. It looks pretty darn good with the CLS rims but not drive able like that. It doesn't bother me unless it stays down.

Air leak for sure. I would check the easy to access airmatic line ports and go deeper if it starts to pose issues.

Hahaha! It's -14 degrees outside and the garage is probably 30 degrees. I need to add more love and heat the garage at night for the poor AMG.

For those who said replacing the bags fixed the problem, did you have an even drop? Mine drops evenly making me think it's something other than a bad bag.

What ties the two bags together?

An air line :-) hehe. Sorry guys a just feel like being an ahole. On a side note I'm on original bags 85kmiles and my car can sit for a few weeks with no pressure loss. So I can't say it's normal for them to lose pressure after a few days which someone posted saying an mb tech thinks it's ok to sag a bit overnight...

My 2005 does the same if left outside overnight and below freezing. Parking in the garage it never happens. Maybe a small drop but nothing compared. Science man...science.
Soon as it cranks up and warms up....good as new. Spoke to shop and they said they could spend a few hours on it but probably never find it. Have to wait for a failure before doing anything real about it.

Mine did that too, it would be slammed in the rear only within a 6-7 days. Only the rear though.

Mine is sinking on the passenger side in 2hrs now. Not driving it until I get some arnott air springs. Don't really have the 700 at the moment. Sucks

Yes they do. It was a week. Few weeks later 2 days then a day later a few hrs. Happened fast. First started only when cold. When it's started the compressor doesn't run that much, every 7-10 mins but I don't want to get stuck somewhere when it ruptures.

Well drove the car the other day in sport 2. Has not dropped at all. In comfort or raised it drops in hours or a day. I'm wondering if the air bags are not used in sport 2 and they are in comfort and raised. I may have a leaking bag and not airspring. I'm leaving it in sport 2 for now.

It seemed to only happen when it was very cold out like under 25 degrees. I have moved back to Vegas and have not had it happen again. The guy at the Indie I went to said they do that in cold temps.

Thanks for the update. Glad it's ok. I'm sticking with sports mode
