Differential shot, what are my options?
Getting a significant noise from the rear when accelerating and decelerating. Had a MB tech over to diagnose and he said rear diff gone. He recommended complete replacement. What are my options?
Is the E55 diff shared with any other model MB? Not really any used diffs up my way. Also thinking LSD?

if you have to buy one then I would consider going the quaife route and possibly some steeper gears https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...group-buy.html

Thanks guys. I am booked with another MB tech in 1.5 wks from now. Want to get 2nd opinion to be sure. Sounds like i need the whole assembly including gears. That makes the LSD purely incremental spend which sux.

According to mbonlineparts.com my 05 e55 has same axle part number as an 09 e63.
JoeNobody was the e63 pumpkin a complete bolt in? Can MB modify tcu or do i need aftermarket?

E55 has 2 different diffs built in:
HAG210E -> up to 2004, screwed side shafts
HAG215 -> 2004 up to now, plugged side shafts.
AMG-Diffs from R230, C219 und W211 fit into your car.
Gear Ratio E55: 2,65
Gear Ratio E63: 2,82
Gear Ratio CLS55: 2,65
Gear Ratio CLS63: 2,82
Gear Ratio SL55: 2,82
Gear Ratio SL63: 3,06
Gear Ratio SL65: 2,82
If you mount a different gear ratio, you need to code gear ratio in TCU.
MB cannot code gear ratio. This needs to be done by a tuner.

I got my E63 LSD in the pumpkin, so it was just a simple swap with no diff surgery needed.
A Quaife LSD has a higher lockup rate (E63 is only 45% I believe), but the E63 factory LSD is a progressive lockup so it's a bit more predictable.

2004 MERC E55
e55 rear diff
Hotsause: i have a rear diff with pumpkin allready to go with the p30 lsd installed with new bearings and seals all done my me. The p30 is said to have a 30 to 40% lockup and what mercedes used on the cls models that had this upgrade. I dont know where you are with what you willing to pay??? Thought i would use it in my car but i may be done upgrading and go another route with another model. But i have had this for ovrr year and filled with mobil diff fluid. Fluid will be removed to ship but this pumpkin is heavy! to make it reasonable, just mail me your pumpkin with all busted par t s inside and just throw me a price for my unit with exchange of your pumpkin. We both would be out of shipping of our units tho, and i cannot stress enough: damn thing is very heavy! Thanks. Al green 561-713-0361

So I was told the same thing. E63 LSD pumpkin will install directly to 2005+ E55 with no issues. The coding part I didn't know. going from 2.65 to 2.82 final drive. Forgive me for asking, Has anyone done this mod successfully?

I installed a CLS63 diff with Drexler-LSD.
Fits P&P, only TCU had to be reprogrammed with new gear ratio.
OEM-LSD has different different locking in push and pull situations. This matches to the ESP-Application.
If you have higher locking rates, especially in push situations, ESP might have problems.

That sounds like a nice upgrade. I would be all over this if I had some extra cash.

If you can find a 2006 CLS LSD, it'll have the factory drive ratio, so no TCU mod needed - although CLS55 has lower lockup rate, and the lower gear ratio is half of the fun of the mod (second gear now pulls really hard).

No ESP problems.
I've wondered if the cars with a factory LSD have different ESP tuning, but I can't figure out for sure. If I can find someone to help with Xentry online flashing, I may try adding LSD option to my datacard (which might make changes to the ECU ESP programming, although if the changes are in the TCU then datacard changes may not change anything).

Yes I did this exact mod. You need TCU modified for the different final drive ratio (EuroCharged can do it), other than that it's a drop in installation.

Yes, shorter final drive is essentially a torque multiplier. Sounds like a hoot. Hmmm now you got me thinking… Only thing is, hasn't some guys already done the final drive and gone slower in the 1/4 because of that late shift into 4th. Instead of redlining past the 1/4. But I am sure top end is increased and more fun to drive overall. Agree?

Already turns over quite high rpms for a V8 on the highway. 3k rpm as I recall at normal SoCal cruising speed on the hwy.

Is it worth changing my 06 E55 stock diff to a post-03 SL55 diff with its slightly higher ratio? Currently I feel all but first gear is a little tall. I can sacrifice higher hwy crusing rpms for stronger acceleration throughout.
Can get a complete SL55 diff w/housing for a few hundred (no luck finding a P30 pkg diff), but how much would indie charge to swap it? Also already have TCU tune w/ free reflashes. Thanks.

Man this has been a bumpy ride, here is my status now:
All shops have been pointing to a new or complete pumpkin swap - I suspect in most of the cases the knowledge of the internals is just not there. So...
Got eurocharged Toronto to quote me a R&R for the entire diff pumpkin $600 CAD which is a fantastic price.
1) CLS55 diff from wreckers about $475 CAD + $600 CAD = $1,075 CAD
2) Stock E55 diff which I think is same as CLS55 diff (same price basically). However, with little inventory across the country some are up in the $700 CAD range let's call it $1,300 CAD
3) Any other diff like E63, SL55 etc.. with a different gear ratio requires a reprogram of the TCU. According to EC Toronto its $599 for the TCU & another $300 to program for a different gear ratio. That makes options like a P30 LSD up near $2,600 CAD all said & done.
Seems like the CLS55 diff is the way to go, but I am a little concerned about purchasing a used diff from a wrecker that turns out to have a similar problem. Need some recommendations on this one. I am willing to roadtrip as well to get top notch service/expertise. Car sounds like a *****box with all the noise.

Inquired into some parting out threads in the classified but no response. Found a CLS55 one 275 miles away for 375 USD. Car had 50k miles. Hoping to scoop it up this week.
Car was apparently hit on drivers rear but not too badly. I think it should be OK?

Picture of a donor car not too far away, they drove car into the wreckers. Should I be concerned about diff with the accident position?
