2.82 or 3.06 gear swap
Looking to swap out my 2.65 for 2.82 gears in the rear differential. Found a diff for a E500 2003-2006 for $200.00. Will this gear set swap into a 2005 AMG diff? I know I have to retune the TCU as well. Thanks

Sounds like 3.06 could be better for top end pulls although you will lose some top speed. But, you should build speed quicker.
But for drag it seems like it could just want to blow the tires off trying to launch with big power and shorter final drive. Or is it working just right?
How does everyone rate the gear swap from stock so far? Im not convinced it will run quicker in the 1/4 with that later shift to 4th right before the 1/4. But right after it should be ripping.

It pulls way harder than the 2.65 stock gear. This is shifting into 4th too fellas. I trapped 130mph consistently here in the GA heat with the 3.06. You will need a taller slick if you plan to drag the car

My only question is it really quicker in the 1/4 specifically?
Putting a taller tire to compensate for short gear is needed to stay in 3rd through the traps. But, It seems counter productive. Putting substantially heavier tire on a car that isn't really pushing that much power for big full slicks. I think your car could have quicker on stock final drive and the 255 16s guys running. But, solely expressing my opinion Craig :-)
Would they really be better then leaving stock final drive. My rule of thumb and what I learned about drag racing is you want the smallest tire you can still hook up on the car. There is such a thing called over tire and it will slow you down considerably.
Not saying anything about your setup craig your setup was boss. But, just thinking out loud. Is it really better for 1/4.
Roll races and all around is 100% for me. I don't need to be convinced and I do want this swap. But, not at the price of slower 1/4 times.

hoosier's qtp tire which is the same height as the 255 radial, the qtp is a lighter tire and will grow taller during the run. a gear change has no effect on act as a pulley would.

The getrag case is the weak point now. Not the gearing.
Edit: btw, the 2006-2009 srt8 all have the same 215mm 3.06 rear pinion sized gearing. If you need one, go to LX Forums and post a WTB, you'll have 5 guys to choose from.

Out Of Control!!
I have a 670whp/700wtq 2007 Magunum srt8 with a 3.06 getrag rear. There is no issue blowing the tires off at the strip with the right tire and wheel setup. 1.5 60' all day.
