Fixed broken trunk close / lock button
Since I bought my 2004 E55 6 months ago, the red trunk close / lock button hasn't worked. I traced the issue down to two broken wires along the trunk lifter arm.
This isn't a detailed DIY, but here's what's needed:
To inspect the wires and button:
1) Remove the panel surround for the button. It's 6 or so 25 torx bolts.
2) Remove the trunk lid liner, it's 6 or so plastic push/pull pins and three electrical connectors (trunk close button, green safety light, trunk lid light).
3) Remove the driver side trunk lifter arm cover (a push/pull pin and two clips)
4) Remove driver side trunk wall cover (2 push / pull pins and 2 20 torx bolts)... then pull it out.
5) cut off the old electrical wrap
Once I did that, I could clearly saw one broken wire. After tugging on each wire, there were three total broken wires (two were to the trunk button). Once fixed, the trunk button worked perfectly.
Below are some pics of the damage and the fix...
First broken wire
First broken wire, zoomed out...
Three broken wires fixed
All cleaned up
Wires re-attached to trunk lifter arm
Trunk lid wires cleaned up

I had to do the same thing a few months ago. It's certainly a good feeling to be able to fix it yourself and not get raked over the coals by the dealer!

Fuse for trunk lid
Hi
I was also looking for the fuse that would be for trunk lid instruments. My brake light went out, then the close button.
Thank you Moehler! Saved me much time knowing where to look,
and sure enough - broken wires. Quick fix. I just imagine what MB would charge me - two hour estimate, wire harness replacement.....
Thank you MBworld

MBWorld Fanatic!
I did this a few months ago too. I added a small loop in there to try to spread the load so the stress is not at a specific point. Anyone with electric trunk option is going to have this issue sooner or later. Looks like it is always the same few wires that break like this.

Just fixed mine tonight. I put a new wire tie back on like the factory, but left it a little loose. Too tight is what caused the failure in the 1st place in my opinion.
