Adding 12V power in the center console

I have searched all the DIY stickies and haven't seen what I am looking for. I am sure by now someone has added 12v power to the cupholder area under the sliding armrest door, but I am having no luck finding a thread on it.

I am looking to add a usb power source in that area and figured tapping into the 12v supply behind that console may make sense. My car is pre-wired for some sort of state of the art phone back in 2005. Maybe there is a way to use that harness to add power?

Right now I am just running power with a 3' cord up from that rear 12v in the ashtray, but I would like a more permanent (clean) way of getting it in the cupholder area.

thanks in advance for any idea on this.

He's saying to tap into the cigar lighter wiring under the console.

I bought the stuff to do this. I got a 12V power source for use on a motorcycle. When I finally have to take the dash apart to replace the vent door/flap stepper motor, I am going to tap into one of the keyed 12V sources and run it into the console. I might even get crafty and install a retracting cord system.

you may want to try something like this that has the DC-DC power supply built in. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marine-Caravan-Dual-USB-2-1A-Port-Socket-Charger-Cigarette-Lighter-Flush-Mount-/221808130372?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33a4cb7944
wiring to the Cig lighter as Shardul suggested is a good way to go. The A34/15 Ctel connector/wiring that you mentioned is not worth messing with (for your power)

Cheers,
Chris

or if you wanted something a little cleaner, you could go with something like this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-2-Port-USB-for-DC-DC-Car-Converter-12V-To-5V-3A-15W-Power-Supply-Adapter-/261942456546?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cfcfcb0e2
and use the usb coming off of it or use a panel mount USB like I did in my SL55 (see pic)

You can also "switch" the cig lighter's fuse to "switched with key" or "always on"

Mercedes
check clearances when installing, it's really tight in there. When I installed a usb port the power circuitry pinched a canbus wire on another wire bundle.

How do you remove the rear ashtray? I poked around there for a second, but it wasn't obvious to me.

Great ideas! thanks!
